Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Five

Excerpt:

Meanwhile Victor stood in the kitchen with Rachel.  They stared at each other.

Rachel asked, “Did you arrange this?”

“No.  I had nothing to do with Lawrence and Terence being here or Tabitha coming into the kitchen when she did.  How could I?”

Rachel grabbed Victor.  She pushed him against the kitchen cabinet.  “Tell me the truth.”

Chapter 5

The past … 2015

Mark arrived back at the Ramsey Mansion in Hearthville after a two week stay with his father.  His father was in a hurry for a business meeting with Mayor Hollis Bare.  After helping Mark to carry his bags to the porch he rushed back to his big, black car and drove off.

Mark went inside and looked around.  “Is anyone home?”

Mark knew that he and his father were running late but still he expected that he would be greeted.  Mark went to the kitchen where Rosanne was cooking.  “Where is everyone?”

Rosanne did a fake smile at Mark.  “Good to have you home.”  She then turned back to stir her soup.  “Your mom is up in her bedroom either watching ‘The Three Stooges’ or porn.  To her, it is all the same.  Roger and Stewart are down at the beach.  Tabitha is in her room reading.  Rita is off plotting something evil no doubt.  I have no idea where Victor and Jossette are.”

“They knew that I was coming home today, didn’t they?”

“They were all here waiting at 8:00 AM but then your father called and said you would be running late.”

“Oh well.”

“So how was your stay with your father.”

“I met a girl. Her name is Clarice.  She is two years older than me but we had a blast together.”  Mark grabbed an apple and took a bite. “I think I may lose my virginity to her.”

“Well, if your hymen breaks, I will alert the ‘National Enquirer.'”

Mark laughed.  “You are funny.  When I met Clarice I used my middle name.  I introduced myself as Steed.  I don’t know why I haven’t been using that name.  It makes me sound more manly.”

“Is Clarice after your money the way Rita was until she decided that you are queer and that she hates you?”

Mark shrugged.  “Clarice comes from a rich family.  I may be the one who is after her money.”

Rosanne said, “That is smart.  You never know when your parents are going to cut you off without a dime.”

“Why do you continue working for my mom.  She is sometimes mean to you.  Hell, after Rita did what she did I wanted you fired.  I am mean to you more than I would like to confess.”  Mark hugged Rosanne.  “I am sorry about that. I know that you aren’t a bad sort. Victor told me about the time he has been spending with you and that I should appreciate you more.  I know that he is right about that.”

“I’ve been taking night classes in computer science.  Victor sometimes comes over and helps me with my homework.  I like Victor.  But your mom and Rita still seem to hate him.  I don’t understand it.  To me he has become such a doll.  He and Jossette have been taking Tabitha roller skating.  Victor’s mom Ellen and Judy have been taking her to book club meetings. I understand why you love Victor.  I don’t understand why Rita hates him.”

“When Victor caught Rita trying to frame Jack Minx for stealing her purse while at the same time she stole his money, that set Victor off.  He is very protective of Jack.  Jack is gay and people do pick on him.  That makes Victor angry.”

“I like that about Victor.  He is protective of the people he cares about.  Victor introduced me to Jack. I listened to Jack sing.  Oh my God, he is really good.  He is putting together a heavy metal band but I wish he would go more mainstream.”

“I like heavy metal.  But yeah.  I know what you are saying.  Jack Minx is good.  From what Victor said though, some of the kids try to pick on Jack really something awful.  They thought it was funny what Rita had done.  When Victor first told me, I didn’t believe him.  I wouldn’t believe that about Rita.  How could I be so blind?”

“Rita is my daughter.  I love her. But her father was that way.  Just bad to the bone.  Always was but I didn’t see it at first.”

“Tabitha is so different.”

“Tabitha is my darling.  She is my baby.  But I think Rita knowing that Tabitha is my obvious favorite sets Rita off even worse.  Then you started taking time up with Tabitha with your chess games.  Rita is very jealous of Tabitha.”

“Should I ask who Tabitha’s father is?”

“Victor figured it out the first time he laid eyes on her.  It is scary how smart he is.  But at the same time so wonderful.  Victor and I have talked about Tabitha.  He understands my predicament.”

“Which is?”

“Tabitha’s father is married.  I don’t want to break his marriage up.  Still, I hate that Tabitha doesn’t know what a wonderful man her father is.  I hate that she doesn’t know about her half-siblings.  But I don’t want to hurt her father.  What he and I had was not a mad affair.  Even if there was a chance he might have left his wife for me, we wouldn’t have lasted.  But I do love him.  I do not want to hurt him.”

Mark thought a second. “How could Victor so quickly figure it out?”  Then Mark’s mouth fell open.  “How could I not figure it out? Oh fuck.”

“What?”

“I was talking to Aunt Terence and told her how Victor had acted when he first met Tabitha.  I told her how Victor thought he knew who her father was when he first saw her.  Shit.”

“In the last year or so I have intentionally kept Tabitha away from Terence and Lawrence.  It has only been in the last year or so that the resemblance has become so obvious.  Still, I had not realized it was that obvious until Rachel told me that Victor recognized the resemblance.  Terence knows what Rachel looked like when she was young.  She knows what Lawrence looked like when he was young.  So the incident with Victor has worried me.”

“I hope I did not pique Terence’s interest but I am afraid that I did.”

“I need to quit this job.  I don’t want Lawrence hurt.  It is just I have worked for Rachel so long.  And Arthur does pay me well.  He thinks the good pay discourages me from hurting Lawrence.  He doesn’t know I would never intentionally hurt Lawrence for the world.”

Mark said, “I am sorry.  It never crossed my mind that Lawrence would ever have cheated on Terence with you and that he might be Tabitha’s father.”

Rosanne said, “Maybe you are overreacting.  Maybe I am overreacting.  It has always been easy enough to keep Terence away from Tabitha.  Terence has never shown any interest in my children.  That is not likely to change.”

Terence and Lawrence came knocking on the kitchen door.  Then they let themselves in.  Terence said, “Hey Rosanne, is Rachel around.  Lawrence and I are going to New York and we would like for Roger and Jossette to stay here a couple of weeks while we are gone.”

Lawrence said, “Hey Mark, Terence told me how much you like the mansion Terence is building.”

“It is wonderful.  I like the colonial style with the large columns.”

Rosanne said, “The intercom is not working.  I will go get Rachel.  Mark, will you watch the soup and make sure it does not stick.”

“Sure.”

Rosanne rushed to get Rachel.

Mark said, “So you are going to New York?”

Terence said, “I have some business there and we will be doing some shopping.”

“Cool.”  Mark stirred the soup.

Rita came into the kitchen.  “Where is mom?”

“She went to get my mom.  The intercom is not working.”

Terence asked, “So are you Tabitha?”

“No.  I am Rita.  Tabitha is down in our room reading.”  Rita walked over and looked at the soup.  “I am starved.”  Rita walked over to get a bowl and some soda crackers from the cabinet.”

Victor and Jossette came into the kitchen.  Jossette asked, “Mom, dad, what are you doing here?  I thought you were still in Atlanta.”

Lawrence said, “We came to pack some stuff from the trailer.  We are going to be going to New York for a couple of weeks.  We want you and Roger to stay here with Rachel while we are gone.  That is if it is okay with her.  I haven’t asked her yet.”

Tabitha came into the kitchen.  “Is that soup ready yet.”

“Yeah.  It is done.”  Rita reached over and turned the eye to low.

Rosanne came back into the kitchen.  She saw Tabitha standing there in the kitchen.  “Tabitha, will you run down to the garage and see if I left my pocketbook in the car.”

“Sure.”

Terence looked at Tabitha.  She looked at Rosanne.  She looked at Lawrence and saw the look of horror on Lawrence’s face.  He had realized the resemblance as well.

Terence said, “I will be going to New York by myself.  I will be calling a divorce attorney.”

Lawrence screamed, “What?”

“I thought a trip to New York might save our marriage but now I see we have no marriage to save.  I will not tolerate a man who cheats on me.”

“Fifteen years ago.”

“You cheated with Rosanne.  You cheated with your sister’s cook.”

Rachel walked into the kitchen to hear Terence’s comment.  Rachel said, “In fairness she is a hell of a cook.”

Rosanne said, “Thanks.”

Terence fled out the kitchen door.  Lawrence chased after her.

Rachel said, “I gather Terence realized the resemblance.”

Rosanne nodded.

Crying, Tabitha fled from the kitchen.

Rita said, “I do hope Tabitha goes to live with Lawrence.  It will be cool to have a room of my own.”

Jossette looked at Mark.  “Tabitha is my half-sister.”

Mark said, “Yes.  It was a secret.”

Jossette said, “Show me to her room.”

Mark and Jossette went to the basement apartment where Rosanne lived with her daughters.  Rosanne followed.

Jossette asked, “Did dad know?”

Rosanne said, “No.  He didn’t know.  It has only been recently that Tabitha truly began to favor the Ogleby family.  I thought I could keep her away from Terence and Lawrence. That was stupid of me.”

Jossette said, “Poor Tabitha.  She discovers that dad is her father and he just leaves her standing there.”

Rosanne said, “I wish Terence had not behaved that way but I understand her anger.  I guess she might think that Lawrence was keeping Tabitha a secret but he wasn’t.”

Jossette said, “But he was keeping the affair a secret.”

“The affair has long ended though I will always love Lawrence.  I think to Lawrence what we had was just a fling.  And that is okay.”

Rosanne opened the door to Tabitha’s room.  Tabitha looked at her mom.  “I had fantasies of when I would meet my father.    In none of those fantasies did he walk off and leave me.”

Mark said, “I am sorry.  He doesn’t know you yet.”

“When he chased after his wife and left me standing there, he lost that chance.  I will never have anything to do with him.”

Jossette said, “And me.  I am here.  You are my sister.”

Rita stormed into the room and shoved Jossette back.  “No.  She is not your sister.  She is my sister.  You stay away from her.  Your entire damn family stay away from her.”

Tabith said, “Rita.  No.  Rita, you will always be my sister.  You don’t have to be mean to Jossette.”

Rita said, “Mom.  I want us out of here.  I want us the hell out of here.  This family does not love us. They do not care about us.”

Mark said, “I care about Tabitha.  She is my cousin just like Roger and Jossette.”

Rita attacked Mark.  “You son of a bitch.  You will not steal my sister.  You will not turn my sister against me.”

“I am telling you the truth.”

“Lawrence and Terence always come through the front door.  Why would they come through the kitchen door?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told Terence about Tabitha, didn’t you?  She came into the kitchen hoping to see Tabitha.”

“I did not tell Terence or anyone about Tabitha.”

“Liar, liar, pants on fire.  You with that big cock that my son and niece do desire.”  Rachel thought about kissing Victor on the mouth.  She backed away from him.  She said, “I hate you.  I want you to stay away from my son and niece.”

“No.  I will not stay away from them.”

Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Four

Excerpt:

Victor looked around.  He saw that Rachel and Arthur had a look of horror on their faces.  “I thought I saw a resemblance but maybe not.  I am sorry that I spoke out of turn.”  Victor guessed that Rachel’s brother Lawrence was Tabitha’s father but he was not about to suggest that to Mark.  Whether what he thought he had figured out was true or not, he guessed some secrets are best kept.

Tabitha said, “Tell me who it is that you think I favor.”

Rachel knew that Tabitha favored a younger version of herself.  She wondered with the age difference if there was enough of a resemblance for Victor to notice.

Victor said, “You favor all the most beautiful women.  You have the classic ‘IT’ look.  Your father must surely carry the genes of beauty and aristocracy.”

Chapter 4

The past … 2015

Mark and Victor went inside.  They sat down on the couch and turned the television on to watch a rerun of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Rachel came down the stairs in a rather dramatic fashion, dressed as though she were about to go to some high society event.  She sat down in a chair that was turned to face a side view of the black couch with bright yellow round pillows on each end.  Arthur stood behind the couch facing the staircase and the television.

Rachel said, “Mark,  son, I love you and you are always welcome here.  You will always have a room here.  I am sorry I allowed myself to be manipulated by Rita.”

Mark stood and walked to stand beside the chair where his mom sat.  He knelt and kissed her on the side of the face.  “I love you mom, but don’t ever turn against me again.  When I tell you something, you believe me.  If I were gay, I would not be ashamed of it.”

Rachel nodded.  “Understood.”

“I am going to stay with dad for two weeks and then I will be back here.  When school starts back, I will enroll to go to school where you have the apartment in Atlanta as always.”  The Atlanta Apartment was a 5,000 square foot town house with maid quarters for Rosanne and her daughters.  It was paid for by Arthur.

“I thought the plan was for us to move here and live here full time.”

“No.  We will continue using the apartment in Atlanta that is near dad and near where Terence is building her mansion.”

Mark stood up from kneeling next to his mom.  “Victor, I will be back here in two weeks.  I do enjoy my summers here and spending time with you.  I am sorry I changed my mind about wanting to live in Hearthville full time.”

“That is cool.  I will be visiting Jossette in Atlanta.  I will visit you as well.”

Rachel gave Victor something of a dirty look.  She thought to herself, “Yeah, you and your big dick.”

Rita came into the room.  “Mark, I am sorry.  I don’t want us to break up.”

“Our relationship is over.”

Tabitha came into the room.  That was the first time Victor had laid eyes on her.  “Oh my God, you are so beautiful. Who are you?”

Rita said, “She is my idiot half-sister.  Mom doesn’t know who her father is.  She is the product of a drunken orgy.”

Tabitha was wearing a halter top and Victor eyed the diamond shaped birthmark on her neck.  He remembered seeing a similar birthmark on the back of Rachel’s shoulder when they had been swimming.  Then Victor compared the features of Rachel and Tabitha.  Because of the age difference there was no striking resemblance between Rachel and Tabitha.  It was not like they were twins.  But they did favor enough to guess that Rachel and Tabitha were related.  Then Victor considered that Tabitha probably favored Rachel’s brother Lawrence more than Rachel. Victor shook his head no.  “Anyone with eyes knows who your father is.”  As soon as the words had slipped out of Victor’s mouth, he regretted what he had said.

Mark stared at Victor.  What was Victor seeing that he didn’t see? He guessed Victor knew someone who she favored.  Mark asked, “Who?”

Tabitha grinned.  She laughed. “You had me going for a second. You are so full of blarney, but I do see why Jossette dearly loves you.”

Rachel smiled at thinking how Victor admiring Tabitha’s beauty was sort of him admiring her beauty.  She liked the compliment.

Rita stood with an expression of anger and resentment.  She said, “Gay men do like women who would make good drag queens.”

Tabitha said, “Whatever.  Mark, I will miss you.  When you get back we must finish that chess game we have been playing.”

“We will.  I will be back in two weeks.”

Victor said, “Tabitha, why have I not seen you around here before.”

Rita said, “Oh my God, she is such a bookworm.  She stays down in that drab basement where mom is forced to live and she reads all day.  That is when she is not at the library.”

“I do love reading.”

Victor said, “Reading is wonderful.  But you must live.  You must live your life to explore the wonderful blessings that God has given you.  This world is better than any book that you might read.  Don’t stay hidden in your room.  There is a big world out there to explore with people to meet.”

“I am trying to do better.  I am just very shy.”

Mark said, “Shyness is something that Tabitha and I have in common.”  Mark knew how much Victor and Jossette had worked to bring him out of his shell.  “I’ve told Tabitha how much being friends with you Victor has helped me.”

Rita said, “I am shy as well.”

Victor said, “Shy like a snake sneaking about and slithering around.”

“Victor, I hate you.  I hate you more than words can describe.”

“When you hurt Jack Minx, the feeling became mutual.  Then this ridiculous stunt you pulled trying to hurt Mark with his mom, unbelievable.  What is wrong with you?”

Rita ran from the room screaming and pretending to sob. “I hate him.  I hate him.”

Tabitha grinned.

Victor laughed.  “I think she hates me.”

Arthur said, “I would not be shocked if she does not fancy fantasies about you and your big cock.  Rita may be in love with you or in love with the idea of being in love with you.  Still, she doesn’t want to have those thoughts.”

Victor shrugged.  He wasn’t sure what to say.

Tabitha said, “I guess I better go see about her before she starts destroying our room and ripping up our clothes.”

Tabitha began to leave the room.  She looked back at Victor.  “I will try to not be so shy in the future.”

Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Three

Excerpt:

Arthur reached out his hand to Victor.  “Terence has told me good things about you.  She said it is unbelievable what you and Jossette were able to design.”

Victor quickly sat up from the lounge and grabbed Arthur’s hand to give Arthur a firm handshake. He eased his cup and straw to a stand next to the lounge chair.  “Terence did more than help just a little bit.  She played a major part in the design.”

Arthur said, “Lawrence married well.  Rachel and I think highly of Terrence.  Well Victor, I would really like to talk more with you some time but right now I have the great pleasure of having to reason with my very often unreasonable x-wife.  Maybe you would like to go in there instead of me and I sit out here with Mark.”

“No sir. Ms. Rachel does not much like me.”

Arthur laughed.  “She doesn’t much like me either. We have that in common.”

Chapter 3

The past … 2015

Arthur drove up.

Mark had his bags packed and some of his things boxed up.  Mark was seated in a green swing on the front porch.  He had his things stacked off to the side at the base of the cement steps.  Victor was reclined in a lounge chair, colored with ocean waves, not too far from the swing.  Victor sucked on a straw dipped down in his chocolate frosty cup from Wendy’s.  He wiggled his toes in his sandals.

“I wish I had not let Jossette paint my toe nails.  Even painted black they look like they might want to sing show tunes.”

“Yeah.  Apparently around mom, that can be a problem.”

“I am sorry.”

“It is not your fault.”

Arthur got out of his car.  He walked up to Mark who had begun to bounce the swing side to side.  “Is your mom around?”

“She is in her room crying.  It is not noon and she is already drunk and popping pills.”

Arthur looked at Victor’s black toe nails. “Rachel used to do that to me.”

“Yeah.  Jossette wasn’t sure about the color and I was her guinea pig.  Turned out she doesn’t like the color.”

Mark asked, “Why bother talking to her. Let us just go!”

“I don’t want you to become estranged from your mom.  Despite everything I know that you love her.  I love her.  I don’t want her hurt.”

“Mom has allowed Rita and Rosanne in my room to make plans to decorate the room for Rita and Tabitha.  She has disowned her gay son.”

Victor quickly said, “I love Jossette.  Mark and I are not gay.”

Arthur said, “Honestly, it would be fine if you were.  I don’t know what the hell is wrong with Rachel.  It is not like she has never had sex with a woman.”

Arthur opened the screen door.  It bounced against his back as he stepped inside.  He went up the stairs and stepped into Mark’s room.  He looked at Rosanne and Rita and Tabitha.

Tabitha said, “Mr. Ramsey, I have nothing to do with any of this.”

Arthur said, “Dear, you are fine.  Do not worry.  Rosanne and Rita, if I ever find either of you in Mark’s bedroom again I will fire you.  Do you understand?”

Rosanne said, “Yes sir.   Rachel was just trying to use us in her attempt to use reverse psychology of sorts on Mark.  Trust me, I had no plans for Rita to take this room from Mark.”

Rosanne and her daughters quickly left the room.

Arthur spoke to himself, “Yeah.  I bet.”

Arthur walked to Rachel’s room.  He opened the door to find her drinking and watching “The Three Stooges.”

Laughing, Rachel looked at her x-husband.  “They crack me up.”

Arthur turned the television off.  “You are going to apologize to Mark.  You are going to apologize to Victor.”

“No.  I am not.  I have decided that I hate our son.”

“You know that you do not hate Mark.”

“I do.  I have decided. I hate him. I will not have a cock sucker as a son.  I just will not.”

“Mark and Victor are not gay.”

Look in the top drawer of my dresser there.  I printed the pictures out to show you.”

Arthur went to the top drawer.  He picked up the two pictures of Mark and Victor.  Arthur looked at the pictures.  “My God. Victor is hung like a horse.  Brilliant and a stallion.  If our son were gay, he could do worse.  Jossette is one lucky girl.”

“Look at that picture of them playing leapfrog on the diving board.  They are gay.”

“No.  I am pretty sure they are drunk and are just acting stupid.  But look dear, it is your job to love Mark no matter what.  It doesn’t matter whether he is straight or gay or bisexual or whatever.  Hell.  You are bisexual.”

“I hate that part of me.  I don’t know why I ever thought I liked going down on my girlfriend.  In the end she was such a bitch to me.  She tried to steal you from me.”

Arthur smiled.  “Yes.  Yes, she did.  Good times.”  Arthur remembered the woman was caught trying to break into his safe. “And then not so much.  Anyway.  Dear.  Understand that Rosanne and Rita are manipulating you, just like that woman did.  That woman manipulated the both of us.  You need to question why Rosanne and Rita want Mark out of here.”

“Rita did not suggest Mark leave.  She wanted us to cut our vacation short and move back to our Atlanta Apartment as a way to keep Mark and Victor apart.  I am the one who suggested that Mark should move in with you.  And by the way Rosanne had nothing to do with any of this.  Your taking Mark’s side and wanting Rosanne fired is wrong. It is stupid. I love Rosanne as a dear friend and I know she feels the same way about me, but if she is hurt then she might strike out at my brother Lawrence as a way to get even. “

“Maybe Rosanne just looked guilty there in Mark’s bedroom but my point stands; you were being manipulated.”

“Do you plan to take orders from your darling son and fire Rosanne because of Rita?”

“No.  Of course not.  But I understand Mark’s anger.  And you know he does not know anything about Lawrence and Rosanne.  He does not know that Tabitha is Lawrence’s daughter and that Rosanne is kind of, sort of, part of our family in an unconventional sense.”  Arthur thought about Tabitha.   Rosanne was working for Rachel when the affair happened and continued working for Rachel after Tabitha was born.  There was no obvious threat by Rosanne to break up Lawrence’s marriage to Terence, but he knew that was a fear of Rachel’s if Rosanne were to get angry.

Rachel moved to sit on the side of her bed.  “I love Rosanne as a friend. Even though Tabitha does not know that she is my niece, I love Tabitha. My not wanting Rosanne fired is not just because I am afraid if she were to get angry she might hurt Lawrence, I do not want her hurt.”

“I don’t want Rosanne or Tabitha hurt either.  I know you care about them.  But you have to do right by Mark.  He is your son.  You love Mark.  You know that you do.”

“He is my baby.  But maybe I haven’t been tough enough on him.”

“You say maybe you weren’t tough enough on Mark.  I remember a time when we were being too tough.  Do you remember how sickly Mark was.  I had my boy in crisis and I didn’t realize it.  I was hurting him and I did not know it.  Victor went to Terence and told her in no uncertain terms that she had to have a talk with me.  He told her that she had to demand that I start treating Mark with respect.  Terence watched as Jossette and Victor worked to give our son confidence.  Victor helped save Mark’s life.  You owe Victor a thanks.”

“Says you.”

“Says me.  I want Mark to live with me as he wants but I want him to be welcomed to live here and the Atlanta Apartment as well.  I remind you that this place is in my name and I pay all of the upkeep cost. I will sell it out from under you if you do not agree to my terms.  I will kick you out of the Atlanta Apartment as well.  Our divorce agreement gives me that right.”

Rachel said, “According to your lawyers who cheated me out of a divorce settlement, I have all kinds of money.  I could buy this place.  I could buy another place even better.  That is if I have the money that your lawyers say I have.”

“I know you have the money.   I know how you have the money.  I will not allow you to buy this place through back channels.”

“I do love this place.”

“You also love Mark.  Do right by him.  Don’t let Rita manipulate you.  You should wonder why she wants to move back to Atlanta early or whatever her agenda is.  Don’t let her come between you and Mark.”

“Let me shower and clean up.  I will go down and I will apologize to Mark.”

“Victor is down there as well.”

“I will be civil to him.”

“Okay.”

Chapter 2

The past … 2015

Rachel asked Rita, “What is wrong honey?  You look so sad.”

“I am confused.”

“About what?”

“My relationship with Mark.” (Mark is Steed’s first name.  Steed is his middle name.)

Rita had a devilish look on her face. “I think Victor and Jossette are going to have sex but I am not sure Mark even desires me in that way.”

Rachel said, “You are all too young to even be thinking about sex.  Mark is a good boy and should not have those kind of thoughts.  I may need to have a talk with Jossette.”

Rita looked up at the white fluffy clouds blowing in the otherwise blue sky.  She thought about the lie she was about to tell.  “I walked in on Mark looking at porn.  He must have those kind of thoughts.”

Rachel didn’t say anything.

Rita had been using Mark’s computer to look at gay porn.  She made sure that gay porn was in Mark’s browser history.

Rita stood up and stretched about.  She walked to the pool and stuck her foot in the water.  “It is a little cool.”  Rita walked back to the table.  “I don’t like my swimsuit.  Do you?”

Rachel said, “I think it is lovely.  Rosanne did a fine job sewing it.”

Rita said, “Brown is not my color.  I’d rather the swimsuit had been bright; maybe pink.”

“Pink is a pretty color.  I saw some fabric the other day that had pink as a back color and then with colorful flowers in the foreground.  It was odd but it might make a pretty swimsuit.  I will suggest it to your mom the next time we are at the fabric store.”

“That would be wonderful.  And perhaps buy a bikini pattern.  “I would like for Mark to look at me the way he looks at Victor.”

Rachel wrinkled her nose and squinted her eyes in a puzzled look.  “Girl, you say weird things.  Mark looks at you plenty.”  Rachel lied.  “You are a very pretty girl.”

“Sometimes I wish I was a boy.”

“Dear, why is that?”

“They don’t have to worry about what their swimsuits look like.  Hell, sometimes Victor and Steed swim naked without even a swimsuit on.”

Rachel took a deep breath.  She rolled her eyes.  She stood up.

Rita asked, “Are you fixing to jump into the pool? I will race you. I enjoy when we race even though you always win.”

“Dear.  Not this morning.  I am going inside to work on some things. You have fun.”

Rita smiled.  “I always do.”

Mark came out of the house.  He looked at his mom as she was going inside. “I came down to swim with you and Rita.  Where are you going?”

“I have some work I need to do.  My computer is acting up.  Do you mind if I use your computer?”

“Help yourself.  My password is greengrass899z.”

Rachel thought to herself, “That was too easy.  He is not worried what I might see on his computer.”  Rachel went on inside

Mark ran and jumped on the diving board.  He sprung up and down and then did a cannonball dive into the water.  When he came up out of the water he swam to the side of the pool.  He looked at Rita with a smile.   “Just you and me.  We can do some smooching.”

Rita asked, “Do you ever think about doing more than smooching?”

“Oh my God, your mother would kill me if we got caught having sex.”

“Do you think?”

“Rosanne wouldn’t approve.  That is for sure.”

“So you don’t want to have sex?”

“We are too young.”

Rita jumped into the pool.  She and Mark swam and smooched about for around 30 minutes when Rachel came back out to the pool.  She had a pill bottle in one hand and a glass of bourbon in the other hand.  She took a couple of pills followed by a drink.  “Mark, I need to talk to you.” Her words were slurred.

“Sure.”  Mark got out of the pool and walked up to his mom.  He could tell that his mom was angry.  “Did I do something wrong?”

Rachel walked back into the kitchen.  She then walked to a bar in the den.  Dripping water in his path, Mark followed her. She put the pill bottle down and pour herself another drink.  “I don’t know how to talk to you about this.”

Mark had no idea what to say.  He held his hands up and shrugged.

Rachel guzzled her drink down.  “Did you want me to find that on your computer?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Mark glanced back at Rita standing slightly off from the den.  She was snuggled with a towel and drying off.  She threw Mark a towel.  He grabbed the towel and began to dry himself.

Mark repeated.  “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“I will show you what I am talking about.  Let us go up to your room.”

Rachel staggered.  She stumbled.  Mark took a deep breath as he followed after his mom up the stairs.  Following his mom he looked back at Rita.  He noticed the devilish grin on her face.  He mouthed, “What?”

Mark followed his mom into his bedroom.  Rita quietly followed.  Mark’s mom sat down at the computer.  She typed in the password. She pulled up the browser and its history.  She showed Mark the browser history.  “You have been looking at all this gay porn.”

“No.  I have not.  I have no idea where that browser history came from.  Rita uses my computer.  Maybe she has been looking at gay porn.”

Rita screamed,  “You queer. I have not.”

Mark said, “Hey girl, I don’t know what your problem is but we are finished.  I want your mom fired.  I want the three of you out of here.”  Mark hated what he had said the moment the words came out of his mouth.  He didn’t really want Rita’s mom Rosanne or her sister Tabitha hurt.  But he was angry.  He was furious.

Rachel said, “You don’t control the hiring and firing around here.”

“No, but dad does and I am going to tell him about this shit.  Victor had already clued me in that Rita has changed. He had told me that she had gone from that sweet shy girl I began dating to a crazy bitch.  I didn’t believe him.  But she had to have done this.”

Rachel pulled up a picture of Mark and Victor naked at the pool.  Rachel asked, “And what about this?  Do you deny this is you and Victor?”

“Sometimes we swim naked at night.  It is not weird.  My God, men swim naked in the US Senate Pool and no one thinks anything about it.”

Rachel screamed, “Is that what Victor told you when he was seducing you?”

“No one seduced anyone.  We skinny dip.  The school makes me shower naked with other guys after gym.  It is not a gay thing.”

Rachel said, “It sounds gay to me.  Do the coaches also make you play leapfrog naked.”

Puzzled, Mark asked, “What?”

Rachel pulled up another picture.  “You and Victor played leapfrog on the diving board.”

Mark said, “Okay.  We had hit your bar and were a little drunk but it is not as weird as that picture looks.”  Mark looked at Rita.  “You were spying on me and Victor.  You took these pictures and put them on my computer and then had my mom to find them.”

“I have no idea how the pictures ended up there.  Maybe Jossette took the pictures.”

Mark screamed, “I want Rosanne fired.  I want Rita and Tabitha the hell out of this house.”

Rita said, “I think we should end this summer vacation and move back to your Atlanta Apartment.  That way you can keep Victor and Mark apart.”

Rachel said, “Or maybe I should send Mark to live with his father while I enjoy my summer vacation here in Hearthville.  I’ve worried that Mark may be spending too much time with women.”

“You think I may be gay but you want me to spend more time with men.  Do you ever even listen to yourself when you are drunk.  But here is a clue.  Yeah, I am out of here but not to stay away from Victor. To stay away from you and this  crazy bitch you are allowing to live under this roof.”

“I will call your father.”

“No.  I will call father.  I will live with him.  But I will visit Victor any fucking time I want.”

Rachel said, “I’ve heard enough.  I am going to my room.  I don’t care what you do.  Let Victor use you and make a fool out of you.  I don’t care.  Be his little cock sucking bitch.”

After Rachel left the room, Mark screamed at Rita.  “Why are you still standing in my room. You get the fuck out of my room and I do not want to ever see you in here again.”

“If you go live with your father, maybe Rachel will let me make this my room.”

Mark grabbed up a baseball and threw it to miss Rita, but still close enough to scare her.  He screamed, “Get out of here.”

With a smirk and a dance of her hips she left the room.

Mark called his father.  “Dad, I need to come live with you.”

“I am always glad when you want to visit me, but why are you angry with your mom?”

“I can’t live in this fucking house with Rita and mom.  It is just too damn much.”

“Tell me what is going on.”

“Rita looked at gay porn on my computer and then she had mom thinking I was the one looking at gay porn.  On top of that Rita snapped pictures of me and Victor skinny dipping and put the pictures on my computer for mom to find.  Mom is drunk and on pills and believing that crazy bitch I have been dating.  Victor and I are not gay.”

“Is your mom in the room with you now?”

“No.”

“Let me call your mom.”

“Sure.  Fine.  Whatever. But I am not going to live here.  Mom called me Victor’s little cock sucking bitch.”

“I am calling your mom.”

“Okay.”

Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter One

Excerpt:

“I always thought it was sad that we came to hate each other before we ever fucked.  Do you want to fuck?”

Steed smiled.  For a split second he considered the idea.  “I am dating Judy Duddley.  I am trying to stay faithful to her which is kind of difficult since she seems to be a professional virgin.”

Rita nodded and laughed.  “She has always been a good girl.  She is hardly the kind of girl who would have an open relationship with two men and then ask a third if he would like to fuck.”  Rita held out her hand to Steed in a mocking gesture.  “Meet Rita the slut.”

Chapter 1

Steed drove his red, 1972 Torino to in front of the Victorian style Mansion that his father had bought for his mother a long time ago.  During the divorce his father had not given his mom any money but had allowed her to keep the mansion under the condition that she would not sell it.  His father paid for all of the upkeep cost on the mansion.

The mansion was of the Shingle Victorian style architecture patterned after the Charles Lang Freer House.  The mansion sat in an area on Hearthville Lake that was called the Eastside View. All of the homes in that area were expensive and sat on no less than 30 acres.  The Ramsey Mansion was nestled on fifty acres next door to the Bare Estate which included several hundred acres.

Steed smiled as he looked at the mansion through the passenger window of his car.  Steed remembered how important he felt living in the mansion when he was small.  Though later his Aunt Terence became rich, during that period his cousins Jossette and Roger lived in the trailer park where he now lived.  He wondered if he had ever made his cousins feel poor.  He hoped not.

Steed’s former girlfriend, Rita, drove her small baby blue Volkswagen up behind Steed’s car.  She got out of her car, closed the door, and walked up to the open, driver side, window of Steed’s car.

Rita said, “Long time, no see.  I was shocked when I got a call from you.”

Steed got out of his car.  “I did not much want to call you.  I know you don’t like me any more than I like you, but thanks for coming.”  He and Rita walked around to the kitchen entrance to the mansion.  Steed unlocked the door and they went inside.

The kitchen was brightly clean.  It hardly looked as though it were part of an unoccupied house.  Rita looked around and felt an emptiness. She remembered her mom Rosanne standing at the stove and cooking.  She looked at the table and thought about how Steed’s mom, Rachel, would sit at the table and talk to her mom.  They would tell jokes and laugh.  Rita said, “We had good times.”

“I guess.”

“The entire time that you and I dated, we never had sex. At the end of our relationship you were an awful person.  What you did was so wrong.  But you are not a slut.”

“I am now.  I like sex.  I like sex a lot.  I date both Sam Smith and Selby James.  Does that shock you?”

“After you, I fell in love with the beautiful Clarice Manchester.”  Steed hesitated.  He wondered why he was inclined to tell Rita what he was about to tell her.  He told Rita, “My father stole her from me.  She is now my stepmother.”

“I’ve met Clarice when visiting my sister Tabitha; your father’s lowly maid.  I say that but Tabitha is content.  Clarice is nice.  She is beautiful.  I can understand why you fell in love with her. She is nothing like the plain girl that I was.”

“Before you became so mean, I thought I loved you.  Your looks were never our problem.  I still wonder why, how, you went from being that shy, sweet girl to such a mean person.  You hurt me.  You hurt Victor.”

“I don’t know exactly.  Maybe I was always mean.  It is just when I stopped being so shy I became more bold, more ruthless, more evil.  I had grown so tired of feeling invisible, but that is just an excuse that I sometimes tell myself.”

“In a moment of weakness I slept with my stepmother.  I don’t exactly walk on water.”

“Tabitha told me.  Tabitha thought it was awful but I understood.  She was your girlfriend first.  To me, stealing her back kind of seemed the right thing to do?”

“It was not like that.  It was a moment of weakness.  I was not trying to steal her back.  It just happened.”

“Of course it wasn’t like that.  You are a good boy without a devious bone in that very sexy body of yours.  Are you sure you don’t want to fuck?”

“Sorry.”

“Sure.  If not to fuck, why did you want me to come here?”

“Dr. Donald Higby will be here shortly with my mom.  In sessions my mom has mentioned that she did something to Victor but she has not told Dr. Higby what.  I have not told him either. She has told Dr. Higby that she will tell him but only if he will allow her to visit here.  So he is bringing mom here.”

“Why would you want me to be here to relive that God awful day?”

“Because the truth is that I have put that memory into the abstract.  Jossette and I would refer to that day as the day that mom spanked Victor but of course it was much more than that.  She tried to murder Victor.”

Rita’s voice rose a pitch.  There was emotion in her voice. “I know.  It wasn’t just your mother though.  I was crazy that day.”

“I know mom blamed you. Dr. Higby says that mom mentions you in trying to explain what she will not even talk about.  That is the reason Dr. Higby wanted you here.  I am sorry to put you through this.”

“I was to blame. I know I did wrong that day.  I was as evil as your mom.  She at least had the excuse of being crazy on drugs.  I was stone cold sober and I wanted your mom to kill Victor.  I don’t want to revisit my insanity of that day.  I am leaving.”

“Why did you hate Victor?”

“Because you and Jossette loved him so much.  I was the daughter of your cook and you took me on your dates with Victor.  Those were not double dates.  You were dating Victor.  You were in love with him as much as Jossette was in love with him.”

“I am not gay.”

“You loved Victor more than me. I was this plain girl.  I was ugly.  I knew I was ugly.  And I was dumb.  Next to Victor and Jossette and even you, I was an idiot.  The only clothes that my sister Tabitha and I had that were not hand sewn out of plain, ugly cloth were clothes given to us by Jossette.  Jossette lived in a trailer and was poor.  She was as poor as me.  But your mom bought her the most beautiful clothes.  Your mom never bought Tabitha and me something first.  We always got Jossette’s rejects.”

“It was not like that.  Mom bought clothes for the three of you.”

“Jossette always got first picking.  But worse, the clothes would always look so beautiful on her.  Even when I wore the same dress she had worn, it never looked so good on me.  It was ugly.  I was so ugly.  And I knew it.”

“You weren’t ugly to me.  I loved you.  I did love you.”

“No you didn’t.  There was nothing there to love.  I was backwards.  I was painfully shy with almost no personality.  You loved Victor.”

“I idolized Victor.  He changed my outlook on life.  He helped give me self-confidence where previously I had none.  He taught me how to handle my father.  Before Victor, I was a sickly kid who was so terrified of everything, there were times I wanted to die.”

“In my mind, Victor stole you from me.  I hated him so much that I wanted him dead.  Now I have to live with that.  I have to live with the part I played in your mom’s drug induced insanity.”

“At Jossette’s funeral my mom tried to kill herself.  Now she is in the Hearthville Mental Institution.  She has lucid days but other days  she is off in fantasy land.  They feel like they still have to keep her under suicide watch.”

“Jossette is dead?  Tabitha didn’t tell me.  No one told me.  I had been told that Rachel is in a mental institution but I did not know about Jossette.  She is dead?”

“Yes.”

Rita was visibly upset at the news but she wanted to pretend otherwise.  “Well excuse me if I don’t cry.”

Steed stared at Rita.  He wasn’t sure what to say.

Rita said, “Tell me this.”

“Sure.  I guess.  What?”

“How did it feel when Jossette stopped dating Victor and you couldn’t use her and me as a way to date Victor?”

Steed did not say anything.  Starting to feel angry, he turned to walk away from Rita.  She grabbed him by the shoulder.  She spun him around.  She asked, “Are you now dating Judy as a way to be close to Victor?”

“I am not gay.”

“Maybe you should be.  Selby James is bisexual.  Sally Smith couldn’t handle her fellow liking other fellows, but hey I dig it. Selby is kind of the perfect replacement for you, only he knows that he is queer.  Of course he did lie about it for awhile.  He tried to deny it.  He wanted to love Sally and only Sally but the man just loves cock too much.  Do you ever have fantasies of having Victor’s big juicy cock in your mouth?”

“You are not the same girl that I loved.”

“If you loved me, which I doubt, you loved a lie.  But then that is what a woman being used by a gay man to hide that he is queer, is, isn’t it.  A lie.”

“I loved Victor as a brother.  There was nothing sexual between us.  He is straight.  I am straight.  And I don’t know what the hell you are.”

“I am a slut.  I am slutty Rita.  You could have had sex with me anytime you wanted, but you didn’t.  You didn’t want to have sex with me.  You wanted to have sex with Victor.”

“You are crazy.”

“I am leaving.”

“No.  Please.  Look.  Dr. Donald Higby will be here soon with my mom.  You will be paid money if you cooperate and be honest with what happened that day.”

“How much money?”

“How much do you want?”

Rita thought a second.  “I don’t want money.  I want you to have sex with me and Selby James.  I want you to suck the cock of Selby James.  I want you to let Selby James pound your ass so hard that you cry into my vagina that you will be sucking on.  That is what I want.”

“I am not going to do that.  If you don’t cooperate, what I will do is I will have drugs planted in your car when you least expect it.  I will have you arrested.  Then behind bars you will get to enjoy all the lesbian sex that you want.  Do you think you will enjoy lesbian sex with a 300 pound woman who is holding a sheave to your neck.”

“I am leaving.”

“My father can fire your sister Tabitha.  You are staying.”

“You are a son of a bitch.”

“I have called her worse but I love my mom and I want her better.”

“I hate you.  I hate you more than words can describe.”

“I will have my father write you a check for $20,000 for your time today.”

“Will Dr. Higby report what I say today to the police.  Am I going to be put in legal jeopardy?”

“Dr. Higby understands that if he reports anything he learns in dealing with my mom to the law, then he will face a death sentence.  Dr. Higby has more than one mafia client.”

Rita laughed.  “It must be nice to have a license to kill.  But me, I know I could go to jail for what I helped your mom to do.  Can I really trust Dr. Higby?  Can I really trust you?”

“Yes.”

Steed’s phone began to ring.  He answered the phone.

“This is Dr. Higby.  I am sorry.  Your mom is having an off day.  I don’t think having a session at the mansion would accomplish anything today.  We were about to get into the limousine when your mom started trying to escape.”

“Okay.”

Steed hung up.

Steed looked at Rita.  “Mom is having an off day.  I am sorry that I had you come out here.  I am sorry for everything.”

Rita nodded.  “Before you ever call me again to ask me for a favor, any kind of favor, you had better be prepared to let Selby James fuck you with me watching.  Maybe more than watching.”

“Honey, if you don’t want to end up in jail, you had better do any favor that I ask.”

“Does Judy the Virgin know that she is dating a monster who is in love with her brother?”

“I am not gay.”

“So prove it.  You get naked.  I will get naked. We will fuck right there on that table where my mom use to serve you breakfast like she was a dutiful slave to you, little Prince Charming.”

Rita was not wearing a bra.  She opened the black blouse she was wearing to reveal her nice breasts.

Steed said, “I am not going to have sex with you.”

Rita shoved Steed back against the kitchen cabinets.  She forcefully kissed him.  Then she backed away.  She looked at the horny expression on his face.  She moved back to rub herself against him.  With a devilish smile she pulled his shirt over his head.  She kissed his nipples.

Steed moaned.  “I don’t want to do this.”

“You know you do.  That virgin Judy will not do for you what I will do for you.”

“This is wrong.”

“Wrong is denying your homosexual love for Victor. Wrong is fucking with your stepmother.  This is right.  This is so right.”

Rita yanked Steed’s pants down.  His dick was hard.  He was fully erect.  “Are you thinking about Victor?”

Rita sank to her knees.  She put Steed’s cock in her mouth.

Steed whimpered.  “Fuck.  Fuck.”  Steed shoved his cock in and out of Rita’s mouth.  “Oh yeah.  Gag on my cock.  Choke on it.”  Steed pounded her mouth hard.  He shoved his cock down her throat.  She coughed.  She gagged.  She pulled away and fell back on the floor.

Steed pulled his pants back up.  Zipping up he looked at Rita, half naked, laying on the floor.  “Get dressed.  I want to get out of here.”

“No.  I am not leaving until I feel your hard cock in my pussy.  I want you to pound my pussy.”

Steed put his shirt back on.  He grabbed Rita by the hair of her head.  He dragged her from the kitchen onto the patio.  He locked the kitchen door.  He looked down at Rita on the concrete patio, rubbing her scalp where he had pulled her by her hair.

Rita looked up at him.  “I hate you.”

Steed smiled.  He spit in her face.  “You love me.”

She wiped the spit from her face into her hand.  She smiled.  “We will see how much I love you.  We will see.”

Leaving Rita sitting on the patio, Steed walked around to his car.  His hand was shaking as he got his car key out of his pocket.  He opened his car door and crawled inside his car.  He banged his head on the steering wheel.  “I almost had sex with evil, evil, evil, Rita.  Damn it.  I don’t want to cheat on Judy.  I want to have sex with Judy.  How in the hell am I going to convince Judy that we are ready for the next level in our relationship.”

Steed cranked his car and drove off.

Rita buttoned up her blouse up.  She stood up and adjusted her clothes.   She sat down at a concrete table on the patio.  She looked at the covered swimming pool. She remembered sitting exactly there at the table when Steed’s mom, Rachel had sat down with her.

Stewart was the last person to greet Preacher Pat Piaolo after church. Everyone else had gone to their cars and was leaving. Stewart walked up and shook Preacher Pat’s hand with a firm handshake.

Stewart said, “That was a pretty good sermon but I am pretty sure that Jesus never played football.”

Preacher Pat laughed. “But he would have been a hell of a quarterback. Maybe almost as good as you.”

“My football days are over.”

“I am sure God has a plan for you. You will have a good life.”

“Yeah, people say that when one door closes another door opens, but I don’t like drafty houses. All my plans for what I wanted to do with my life have blown out the window and I am feeling lost.”

Chapter 7

Jack, Victor, Harry, Stewart, Judy, Elliot, and Ellen sat down at the large dining room table to eat fried chicken, butter beans, potato salad, and slices of tomato.

Ellen stared at Victor. She wasn’t sure what to say. Victor saw the look in her eyes. He wondered if his father had told her about Jossette’s death. Victor didn’t say anything.

Between shoving his mouth full of potato salad, Harry watched Stewart. He realized Stewart was darting glances at his father Elliot. He knew Stewart was angry that his father would not tell him what had happened to Victor in Atlanta two years ago. That is when Stewart pin pointed a change in Victor because of the overdose of pills, but Harry thought the change had happened a year earlier when Jossette and Roger had moved to Atlanta. At the ice cream shop Harry had not only heard the ‘top, bottom’ part of the conversation at Victor’s table but he had also heard Victor tell Judy, “Don’t ever hate Jossette. She will forever be the love of my life.” Harry knew that Stewart had also been hurt when Roger moved to Atlanta. “So Mr. Duddley, is there any truth to the rumor that Roger Ogleby may become the new quarterback of the Hearthville Hogs?”

Elliot considered Harry’s question. He saw the irritation the question had brought to Stewart’s expression. “Lawrence would like his son to come to Hearthville, but you know Roger is running a corporation.”

Stewart got up.

Victor shook his head as he watched Stewart leave the dining room. “Brilliant Harry. Brilliant.”

Ellen yelled to Stewart, “Son, you get back in here and eat. Your leg will never properly heal if you starve yourself like some heroin addicted model.”

Elliot yelled, “We will probably keep the same sorry quarterback we have now who will continue to make you look like the greatest quarterback the Hogs ever had.”

Victor yelled, “Get your ass back here and eat with Harry. He is your friend; not mine. My friend would know not to throw Roger up in your face.”

Harry shook his head. “It was just a question.” Then Harry teased, “Victor, you know you love me.”

Victor smiled.

Stewart came back into the dining room. Without saying anything he looked around the table. He sat down and started back eating.

Victor said, “So Jack and I are going bowling later. Anyone want to join us?”

Harry answered, “I don’t bowl with anyone who bowls over 200 and will not give me a handicap.”

Victor acted like he was going to poke Harry in the eyes. Harry quickly pushed Victor’s hands away and screamed, “What the hell?”

Victor said, “I was going to give you a handicap. I was going to make you blind.”

Judy screamed, “Victor. Not funny.” She lectured, “Being blind is no joking matter. Poor Mr. Joe has to walk around with that cane and that dog Joe Jr. who farts all the time. And he has the most ugly wife on the face of the planet and he does not even know it. It is sad.”

Victor burst out laughing. Then Harry started laughing. Stewart rolled his eyes and then began to hold back his laughter.

Judy asked, “Why are you three laughing? It is sad.”

Elliot said, “Especially when his wife gets angry with him and dresses him weird. I sometimes chuckle at how sad that is.”

Judy giggled. “Yeah, the other day I saw him wearing a floral shirt with pink striped pants. I think Ms. Minnie just has bad taste though.”

Victor said, “I like blind Joe. He and I sometimes play checkers at Paps’ store. He is legally blind but he does have some vision. I am planning on going to his house Sunday and help him do some repairs on his roof and his porch. Jack, do you want to come with me.”

Jack said, “Sure. But isn’t Sunday an odd day to do that. You know you aren’t supposed to work on Sundays.”

Victor said, “I don’t go to church. Sunday is the day I set aside to help people in need to do work around their houses.”

Judy said, “I didn’t know you do that on Sunday’s.”

“Not really. In High School I was quite capable of shoving someone’s head in the toilet if they pissed me off.”

Chapter 6

With their ice cream cones in hand, Stewart and Harry sat at a table in one corner of the Ice Cream Shop. With her strawberry milkshake, Judy joined Victor and Harry at a table in the center of the shop.

Judy said, “You scared us. Especially Stewart even though he is sitting over there and pretending otherwise.”

Victor said, “Sorry.” Victor took his foot and shoved out a chair at the table for Judy. “You can sit at the cool table.”

Judy smiled. She nodded. She sat down. “There is no doubt that Jack is cool. But you are a total nerd. I haven’t figured out how you two became friends.”

“Victor protected me from the bullies and at the same time gave me self-esteem when I seriously needed it. Also, I probably would not be into music if not for Victor cussing out the music teacher who wouldn’t let me in her class. She wouldn’t let anyone take her class if they didn’t have an 85 average or better in other classes.”

“His grade average was 82.”

Judy said, “I hated music but the counselor made me take the class. That teacher was always so mean to me.”

“That is because she disliked Victor with a passion.”

Victor said, “She wasn’t too crazy about Stewart either. But she did know music and she helped Jack with a little push from me. So I will always like her for that.”

Judy said, “Jack, I like your music but I think you should change the name of your band.”

Jack exclaimed, “You do!

“Yeah. The Jack Minx Off’s just does not have a good ring to it. Also it sounds like you are trying to remind people about masturbation.”

Victor laughed. “I think that is kind of the idea.”

Jack said, “It was. The name works but Judy, what name would you give us?”

“Jack Minx and the Jack of Diamonds or maybe Jack Minx and the Diamonds.”

“I guess maybe you also want me to fire Selby James and hire you as our manager.”

Judy said, “It is true, I don’t like Selby. But no, you can keep him.”

Jack asked, “Are you around Selby much?”

Judy said, “He has eaten with us at our house some.”

Jack asked, “Why?”

Victor said, “After he and Sally broke up he started hanging around me more. He does similar with Sally’s brother Sam. Sally has made it clear that she and Selby are still friends. Still, I think he mainly wants to be friends with me because he knows that Sally is my friend and being more friendly with me is a way for them to stay close. The three of us would do things together when he was dating Sally so I guess it is not totally weird.”

Jack said, “I am not sure I like you and Selby being friends. I think I should be your only token gay friend.”

Victor said, “You are not a token.”

Judy asked, “So Selby is gay?”

Victor said, “Selby cheated on Sally. He had an affair with David Losovito. It made me angry. I mean, very angry. I cussed Selby out for betraying Sally. I then went over to the Losovito Antique Store and I had it out with David. But he was hurting so bad. I ended up feeling sorry for him. And I became worried that he might do something stupid. Now he and I are closer; friends. Go figure.”

Judy said, “I did not know about any of that. I was at the beauty shop with mom and I did hear someone say how Lilly had divorced David but they didn’t say why.”

Jack asked, “So Victor, are you friends with Lilly? She is really nice. And beautiful.”

Some child sitting with his mom said, “And totally out of Victor’s league.”

Victor turned and gave the chubby kid a grin. Victor nodded. “So Laurie, you have Junior working for Tender now, giving dating advice.”

Laurie laughed. “Junior has a major crush on Lilly.”

Jack asked, “Junior, isn’t Lilly your aunt?”

Junior said, “Jim is my dad; not Johnny.”

Laurie said, “I was well divorced from Johnny before Junior or Janet were born. Jim is their father. But we are close to Johnny and Lilly so I know that confuses some people.” Laurie said, “So Victor, why don’t you know Lilly?”

Victor said, “I don’t really know why we haven’t ever met. We know the same people. I’ve seen her of course but our paths haven’t ever crossed in a way where we would meet.”

Laurie said, “I may have to introduce you two.”

Junior said, “Over my dead body.”

Laurie said, “Well come on Junior. We need to pick your sister up from ballet.” Laurie stood up and put her trash in the garbage. She turned back to Victor. “It was good seeing you all. Jack I saw your band the other night in the park. You all were wonderful.”

Jack said, “Thanks.” He joked, “I didn’t see you putting any money in our hat.”

Laurie gave a face. “I was broke. I am sorry.”

Jack said, “That is cool. I was just teasing.”

Laurie touched Victor’s shoulder. “I am glad you are okay Victor. You scared us out there in the lake.”

“I am sorry that I scared you all. I am okay.”

Laurie said, “David and I were talking about you the other day. Those days in the park were so much fun. You and Jossette. Those are good memories.”

Victor asked, “How is David?”

“You are not wrong to be worried. I am worried about him also.”

“I will make a point to go see him. We will think of something to do. We may get Jim to go with us over to the batting cages.”

“I will tell Jim to be expecting your call.”

“Good.”

“I’ve got to run get Janet. If I am running late she is going to have a fit. She is even more high strung than I am.”

Judy said, “That is hard to believe.”

Laurie slapped at Judy. “Don’t be mean.”

Judy laughed. “Sorry. I can be kind of high strung myself. Just ask Steed.”

“I gather Steed is your stud muffin boyfriend. God. I saw you two the other day at the grocery store with your mom. He is such a hunk.”

Jack said, “He is good looking.”

Victor said, “If he was just a better mechanic.”

Laurie said, “Yeah, well not everyone can be as good as you and Sam. I have to get out of here. Bye.”

They all said bye to Laurie Toro and Junior. Junior turned and stuck his tongue out at them as he left the Ice Cream Parlor.

Judy punched Victor on the shoulder. “Laurie never talks to me.”

“She just did.”

“Only because you and Jack were sitting with me. And she was totally ignoring me until I insulted her.”

Victor said, “Laurie is okay.”

Judy asked, “How is she connected to David?”

“She is his stepsister.”

Jack said, “I did not know that.”

Judy said, “Neither did I.”

Jack said, “So you know all these people who are connected to Lilly but you don’t know Lilly. You know her cousins Sam and Sally who work for her at the Bare Detective Agency when they aren’t doing other stuff. You were friends with Donny Maxton; Lilly’s first husband. You are friends with her now x-husband David. How could your paths not cross?”

“I don’t know. Gosh. Think about Donny. Donny was older than me and basketball was not really my sport but I did enjoy shooting hoops with him. He would tease me and Jossette.” Victor batted his eyes and cleared his throat to control his emotions. “But Lilly was never around when we would play. I don’t think Jossette knew her either.”

Judy said, “I think it is awful the way Jossette dumped you. She just moved off and acted like you were dead to her; like we all were dead to her. And Roger was good friends with Stewart and then no calls. It was weird. I loved Jossette like a sister and now I hate her for the way she did you.”

Victor said, “Don’t ever hate Jossette. She will forever be the love of my life.”

Judy stared at Victor. She could see he was starting to tear up. “So Jack, are you a top or a bottom?”

Victor moaned, “What a thing to ask someone.”

“Judy, do you even know what those terms mean?”

“A bottom likes to get rear ended. A top likes giving the bottom what he wants. So?”

Jack said, “I am mainly a top though I have gotten off on being a power bottom.”

Judy asked, “What does power bottom mean?”

Victor said, “It means he is an alpha male. Regardless of whether he is on top or bottom, he is the one who is in control. For some reason and I have no idea why, Selby explained that to me.”

Jack smiled. “Maybe Selby wants to get into your pants.”

“No. He has never made a pass at me.”

Jack laughed. “Man. You are sometimes so oblivious to people, I am not so sure that you would even know if he was coming on to you.”

Judy asked, “So Victor, if you were gay, and I know you are not, but would you be a top or a bottom?”

Jack laughed. “What a thing to ask your brother. You are so silly.”

Victor said, “I think most straight men would say top.”

Jack said, “You are wrong. If they are being honest, they would say bottom. With women they are straight. And that is who they are. But when they have the gay fantasy they are usually the submissive bottom who wants to be dominated. Even if they are total alphas with women, their fantasy is to be forced because they don’t really sexually desire men. They are straight. The idea of being dominated is the attraction.”

Judy asked, “So have you done a study on the topic or something?”

Jack said, “Victor. Now be honest. If you were in a porn movie that was gay for pay, which part would you play. Would you be the top or the bottom. Now think about it.”

Victor said, “Well. I don’t sexually desire men. I am not turned on by men. So I doubt my dick would get hard for a man. I guess I would have to be the bottom.”

Jack said, “Exactly. The first time someone came on to me in the locker room wanting me to suck them I was like I am man enough if you are gay enough. If their dick gets hard for a man, then they are gay. I don’t care how straight they are pretending to be. They called me queer and there they were standing with their dick hard.”

Judy laughed. “God. I would be horrified if something like that happened to me in the locker room. Did you report them?”

“No. It wasn’t really a big deal. The metoo movement is stupid. If you don’t know how to say no to someone or kick them in the balls if necessary, then put the blame on yourself where it belongs. Some actor or actress sucks someone’s dick thinking they are going to get some movie part and then they don’t get the part, that is not sexual harassment; that is being a whore too stupid to get the money up front.”

Judy said, “I disagree with you. You don’t put the blame on the victim.”

“I do. You listen to some of these supposed cases, it is unbelievable. ‘I was naked in their bed and they jumped on top of me.’ Well, what the hell were you doing naked in their bed. Use some fucking common sense. Don’t be naked in the bed of someone you don’t really know or trust.”

“Okay, but some of the cases are actual rape.”

“That is obviously different. I am talking about where someone wanted me to suck their dick and I said no. That was the end of it. It wasn’t really a big deal and there was no point in me making it a big deal and trying to play the victim or trying to ruin their life.”

“It would have scared me though. Victor, would it have scared you?”

“Not really. In High School I was quite capable of shoving someone’s head in the toilet if they pissed me off.”

Jack said, “I had forgotten about that part of it. You did do that. Didn’t you? More than once you made clear to people that if they picked on me that they had better be prepared to fight. But I had forgotten about you putting his head in the toilet. And now he is a TV wrestler but you handled him like he was nothing.”

“It was a day later after you told me about it, but yeah.”

Judy asked, “Who? Which TV wrestler?”

Victor said, “I am not saying. It is not important.”

Jack said, “No. He is a good guy now. He is still totally in the closet though.”

Judy said, “Victor, how much has happened in your life that I know nothing about?”

Victor said, “I am a simple man with a simple life.”

Jack and Judy both saw the sadness in Victor’s eyes.

Harry and Stewart walked up. “Mom called. She is about to have dinner ready. Jack, she is setting a plate for you.”

Harry said, “And by the way, we heard parts of your conversation. Everyone in the place did.”

Stewart said, “Yeah, bottom boy, let’s get home.”

Victor laughed as he stood up. “Come on Jack.”

Victor looked around the ice cream parlor. Different people waved at him. He waved back.

As they left the ice cream parlor Judy asked, “Why are you and Stewart so popular and no one even knows who I am?”

Jack said, “Of course they know who you are.”

Harry said, “Yeah Judy. They know who you are. You are the sister of Stewart and Victor.” Then he quickly added, “No one knows me either.”

Jack said, “Judy, you are a beautiful girl. You may intimidate people and make them afraid to approach you, but they know who you are.”

“Do I intimidate people?”

Stewart said, “Sort of, but I do that also. We get that from mom. If I hadn’t played football no one would know who I am. In a few years no one will know who Stewart Duddley ever was. I will be totally forgotten.”

Harry said, “I play football and no one knows who I am. They couldn’t even tell you what position I play. But Stewart, I think you underestimate how popular you are, even without football.”

Jack said, “Harry you are totally well known. Everyone knows that you are that wide receiver who fumbles the ball way too fucking much.”

Victor said, “Yeah, Harry, why did you drop so many balls in that last game?”

“Stewart made running the plays and catching the ball easy. He made me look good. Wallace Walgrave sucks as a quarterback. He makes me look bad.”

Stewart said, “He is a good running quarterback. I will give him that.”

Harry said, “Maybe but I want him back in his old position as a running back. I need a quarterback who knows how to pass the ball with precision timing like you used to do.”

Chapter 5

Ellen and Elliot went up to their bedroom and closed the door. No one else was home so they were alone.

Elliot said, “Ellen, I know that you and Terrence made the kids think that none of them wanted to have anything to do with one another, when that was a lie.”

“Victor and Jossette were too close. They were too young. But what does that have to do with what is going on with Victor?”

“Victor knows what you did but Judy and Stewart do not know.”

“Victor knows? But I don’t understand. Why hasn’t he told Judy and Stewart? Why hasn’t he confronted me and screamed at me and demand he be allowed to see Jossette?”

“Neither Victor nor myself want Stewart and Judy to be upset with you. To be clear, what I am talking about happened two years ago. Victor found out two years ago.”

“Two years ago!” Ellen thought a minute. “Are you saying Victor’s hatred for me and what I did is why he overdosed on the pills and why he tried to kill himself today? What did I do today? He was talking to Jack. I don’t understand what I could have done today that would have caused him to want to drown himself. What did I do?”

“Victor does not hate you. He loves you. As far as I know, you didn’t do anything today to upset Victor.”

“I am confused. You are saying that I am the problem but Victor doesn’t hate me.”

“I am not saying that you are the problem. Two years ago Terence called me. Jossette was sick and in the hospital. It started with food poisoning but it became something worse. Her vital organs were damaged and began shutting down. When Terence called me, Jossette was dying. Jossette was in the hospital on her death bed and she wanted to see Victor before she died.”

Upset, Ellen exclaimed, “Dying!” Ellen moaned, “And she wanted to see Victor.” Ellen sat down on the bed. “Two years ago. So Jossette is dead. That sweet girl is dead. She died so young. Oh my God. And Victor did not tell me. You did not tell me. She was like a member of this family before I… Oh fuck. Fucking hell. Son of a bitch. Even I hate me. Of course Victor hates me.”

“He doesn’t hate you. But let me continue.”

Ellen fought back her tears. “Okay. I will try to listen. But this is hard.”

“I know.”

“Before Rachel talked to me and I took her advice to keep the kids apart, Jossette was like a member of this family. I loved Jossette.”

“Rachel Ramsey? Well, never mind that.” Elliot sat down on the bed next to Ellen. He kissed her on the cheek and put his arm around her shoulder to snuggle her close to him. “I am going to continue.”

“Okay.”

“Behind your back I took Victor to see Jossette as she lay dying. They learned what you and Terence had done but neither of them hated either you or Terence. It was not like that. It was about their love for each other.”

Elliot thought back and remembered there did seem to be some argument between Jossette and Rachel. Lawrence, Rachel’s brother and who was Jossette’s father, had scolded Rachel for upsetting Jossette. Elliot shook the memory from his head.

Elliot repeated the point, “Victor’s final moments with Jossette were about their love. There was no hate toward you and Terence.”

“Thank you for saying that.”

“Jossette and Victor had some time but not much. Then Jossette died in Victor’s arms. He has not been the same since. I never imagined that Victor would be affected like he was. At the time I thought I was doing the right thing. Please don’t hate me for going behind your back and doing what I did.”

Ellen turned and kissed her husband on the lips. She hugged him into her arms as he had been hugging her. “It is okay. It would have been awful if Jossette had died without them knowing the truth. I understand.”

“Do you, because I am not sure I do. I think I may have screwed up.”

“No. Terence was right to call you. I may would have screwed up if I had made the decision. It would have been easy to have left Victor not knowing what was happening. But Jossette was Victor’s life at one point. With Terence they became rich together. He needed to know. You did right. I know that in retrospect, but I might not would have known that if I had been the one who had to make the decision at the time. The other decision to pretend ignorance is bliss would have been easier; but wrong. Also, still, you had to have figured that Victor would eventually find out about Jossette.”

“That is true. Back when I was driving Victor to the hospital I never imagined that so few people would know Jossette had died; even two years later.”

“So see, yeah, there really was no choice for you to make.” Ellen considered her words. “You did right to take Victor to the hospital. But I am not sure allowing Victor to grieve alone was the right decision.”

“I would say Victor has grieved for Jossette quite a bit; but that is not exactly right. Anytime he is triggered where he starts to think about her death, something happens. He gets too upset. He does things to shut the memory from his head. Sometimes he will take off running and things like that which helps him to not think about her death.”

“So that is what happened today?”

“Jack Minx had learned about Jossette’s death and wanted to talk to Victor about it, so Victor took off swimming.”

“So see, Victor would have eventually found out about Jossette’s death from someone. If he had not known, he would have found out from Jack Minx today.”

“True.”

“So Victor took off swimming and Jack and Jerry got worried?”

“Exactly. Jerry and Jack got scared because they thought Victor was going to swim out to the middle of the lake and drown. Victor had already turned to swim back toward shore when I got to him.”

“So Victor did not try to kill himself.”

“No. I don’t think he did. He was just trying to fight off the grief that comes over him when the subject of Jossette comes up.”

Ellen asked, “So should I talk to him? Should I let him know that I know? Should we keep this from Stewart and Judy and let them eventually find out from someone else? Jossette was their friend too. They loved Jossette.”

Elliot said, “Jossette’s death is not well known. Her family has not made it widely known. I don’t think we should tell Stewart and Judy. If they find out, then they find out but do you really want it brought out in the open how you kept the kids apart? I think as far as Stewart and Judy are concerned, as long as it can last, ignorance is bliss.”

Ellen asked, “So what should we do about Victor?”

Elliot said, “Except for events like today, Victor has gotten a lot better. Still, I think it would be a mistake to force him to confront his emotions with Stewart and Judy.”

“What happened today scared Stewart. You rushed off and left him sitting there. And then someone said Victor was swimming to the middle of the lake. Judy and I didn’t really think it was a big deal but figured Victor would turn back toward shore. But Stewart flashed back to when Victor took the overdose of pills. And then he got Judy and me scared. Ellen cried. “It was not good.”

“I know. But I had to take what Jerry told me seriously. My priority was to get the boat to Victor and get Victor out of the water.”

“Of course. But similar to how I made up my mind that I had to make you talk to me about things, Stewart also wants you to explain to him what is going on. He is worried about his brother. He wants to know what is going on with Victor.”

“I understand but let us just wait. Okay. I want Victor to be the one to tell Stewart and Judy. I want him to have reached that point where he can tell them. I think he will reach that point.”

“But we can tell them and make them understand that they can’t talk to Victor about it.”

“When they are told, they will know what you did. Stewart and Jossette’s brother Roger were hurt as well. They were friends.”

“Well, you can’t protect me forever. I did what I did and I can’t undo it. If I could, I would. Maybe Stewart and Roger need to know so that they will start back talking to one another.”

“Do you think Stewart needs Roger more than he needs his mother? Stewart needs you. It is possible that Stewart is going to hate you for the lie. And especially now! He has lost all of his dreams because of his hurt leg. His potential football career is gone. He does not need to feel he can’t trust you. He needs you. He needs your love. He needs your support. He does not need to feel that you kept him from his best friend because you were afraid he was developing homosexual feelings for Roger.”

“I didn’t think that. What I did was because of Victor and Jossette. Rachel Ramsey, Jossette’s Aunt, told me that she was afraid Victor might cause Jossette to become pregnant. So I talked to Terence and we decided we should keep the children apart.”

“Maybe it was just me who worried that Roger and Stewart enjoyed their tackling each other way too much. But it was wrong to keep the kids apart. I wasn’t part of the conspiracy but I was kind of glad that Stewart stopped spending time with Roger. So I share the guilt.”

“We will keep it a secret a little longer while we work on strengthening our relationship with Stewart. But the secret of what I did can’t continue. I fucked up and they need to be told.”

“Okay. And I should not have said what I said. When the time comes, Stewart will forgive you. He will forgive me. Victor did and…”

“I wish I could believe that but I know Stewart is not Victor. No one can accuse Stewart of being a mama’s boy. He may hate me and not because of Roger and his friendship but because of what I did to Victor and Jossette. I know that. Stewart loves Victor and I hurt Victor. I thought I was doing right, but I screwed up.”

Elliot again hugged Ellen. “I love you. Your children love you. It is going to be okay. We just need to take care and take it slowly on how we handle things when Stewart and Judy find out.”

“I still think we need to tell Stewart and Judy.”

“Why? They think Roger and Jossette stopped having anything to do with them by choice. Stewart and Judy probably would not go through what Victor is going through but still, why tell them?”

“For Victor.”

“But Victor can not deal with talking about it. He couldn’t talk about it with Jack who is almost like a brother to him.”

“So we just pretend? I am supposed to pretend that I don’t know Jossette is dead. I want to talk to Victor about what I did and let him know how sorry that I am.”

“Victor has made clear to me that he loves you and he does not blame you. You don’t need to hear Victor forgive you. He forgives you. He loves you.”

“I need to talk to Terence.”

“Why? You have not spoken to her in two years.”

“You are not making this easy for me.”

“Sure I am. I always have. Like Jack said earlier, talking is overrated. He wished he had not tried to talk to Victor about Jossette.”

“Okay. I won’t say anything.” Ellen thought a moment. Ellen asked, “Do you really think Stewart is gay?”

Elliot said, “Do you ever see Stewart look at women the way that Victor looks at women?”

Ellen said, “I hadn’t really noticed. Stewart is a jock. He is masculine. He has dated. I know Victor is straight but if I had to guess which one of our sons is gay I would guess Victor.”

“Stewart has never had a long term girlfriend. But listen, I don’t care if he is straight or gay. I just want him to be happy.” That is what Elliot said and that is what he wanted to think. Still, he knew that he hoped he was wrong and that Stewart was straight.

“I feel the same way. I want all my children to be happy. That is the main thing.” As Ellen said that she thought about the child she had given up for adoption when she was sixteen. Elliot knew nothing about that episode in her life. She guessed there was no reason to ever tell him. She guessed there was no reason to ever talk about it. But sometimes she wondered about that baby and she prayed that she had made the right decision.
