Hearthville Serial: Book 5 – Chapter 3

Excerpt:

Judy smiled. She liked the compliment for both herself and Deven. Then she said, “Victor is that your problem? Is it that you can’t find a girl like Jossette who is your intellectual equal?”

Victor stood uncomfortably silent.

Deven jumped in to change the subject. He said, “God, I miss Trish so much.”

Judy gave up on on waiting for Victor to answer. She said to Deven, “Trish Ireland was not right for you, but I am sorry that Steed did what he did. He shouldn’t have done that but to be honest I may have given him the idea. Are you angry at me?”

“No.”

Victor asked, “What did Steed do?”

Chapter 3

Although many people knew that Steed Ramsey is the son of Arthur Ramsey, Judy still did not know. She did not know that she is dating the son of a gangster. George knew but Victor did not have a clue. Victor barely even remembered his friend Mark Ramsey and did not realize that Mark and Steed are one and the same.

In his bedroom Victor was seated at his desk. He sat at his desktop computer working on math equations and a javascript routine for a device that he was working on that was still in its early stages. Victor yawned.

Judy knocked on the door to Victor’s bedroom and then she spoke into the door with her face pressed into it. “Victor I would like for you to go on a double date with Steed and myself.”

George remembered Victor and Jossette going on double dates with Mark and Mark’s then girlfriend Rita Angster. George tried to take over to deflect the situation away from Judy’s plan but Victor would not let George take over. Victor stood from his desk. He stretched. He yawned.

“Victor, please do not pretend you are not hearing me. I know that you are in there.”

Victor walked over and opened his door. He watched his sister as she stumbled forward as the door opened. He caught her from falling. “Sis, you know that I do not like Steed.”

“But I want you to like him.”

“And also I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“I thought you were considering asking Tabitha Angster out.”

George thought, “Oh hell no. Victor, let me out.”

Victor smiled. “I don’t think so.”

“Well, you must know some girl. You are rich. After saving Billy Bingo, you are a freaking hero.”

Deven walked into Victor’s bedroom. He said, “Stewart said it would be okay if I come on up.”

Victor smiled. “Yeah. Sure.”

Judy looked at Deven. Deven looked at Judy. There was silence between the two.

Judy walked over to Victor’s computer. She looked at the computations and the programming code on the computer. She asked, “Is this for a race car.”

Victor said, “That is not written on the screen. How did you figure that out?”

“I don’t know. Lucky guess. But at the mud track should you really be trying to boost the speed?”

Victor said, “It is actually about the braking and starting system along with adding some bounce to avoid getting stuck.”

Deven asked, “Would that component be legal?”

“Only in certain races where it must approved before hand. But if the high bounce can be safely added it would add to the entertainment value. Mayor Hollis who is part owner of the track liked that aspect when I was talking with him.”

Deven said, “Yeah. Sure. Bounce the race car drivers to the moon. That will entertain the crowd.” Deven walked over to look at what Judy was looking at. Deven cleared his throat. “Victor are you sure that is right? It looks like to me the formula contains an error.” Then Deven moaned and took a deep breath. “I wish I was smarter.”

Judy nodded. “Victor often makes me feel that way.”

Victor said, “Oh please. You are both smart. Do you think the average person who took a look at that computer screen would have had a clue to what they were seeing? You two caught on without a second thought. And yes. It does contain an error which I have not corrected yet.”

Deven said, “It doesn’t matter.”

Judy said, “He told Trish some things so that Trish would dump Deven.”

Victor said, “That asshole.”

Judy said, “Like I said, I may have given him the idea even though I was teasing.”

Victor patted his sister’s head and picked at her. “You asshole.”

Judy slapped Victor’s hand away. “I know. I deserve that.”

Deven said, “No. You were both trying to look out for me. And Victor, you know how many times that you told me to breakup with Trish. I would not listen to you. I would not have listened to Steed either.”

“Yeah. But I am sorry. I know how much it hurts when your heart is broken.”

Deven said, “It is not so much that my heart is broken. I am just so freaking horny.”

“Do not say that in front of my sister.”

“Sorry.”

Judy said, “No problem. I guess I will make my exit so that the two of you can talk guy stuff. Victor, I will forget about the double date for now but I still want it to happen.”

“Okay.”

Deven smiled as he watched Judy leave the room.

“Do not look at my sister like that.”

“Sorry.”
