Hearthville Serial: Book 5 – Chapter 16

Excerpt:

Then an image flashed in Victor’s mind of a fleet of fighter spaceships coming their direction. He could hear their horrifying sound that sounded like a swarm of bees. He turned from the gates. “We’ve got to get to the caves. We’ve got to hurry. I feel the forces of Belial coming. Belial is coming. He is coming. We have to hurry. He will cage us. I don’t want to be caged.”

Then they all heard the loud buzzing engines of the spaceships coming. Victor released the gates and he began to spin. Then he fell to the ground. He looked up and he saw an image of Roxy. It was a memory. And around him and Roxy were fifty people, scared and terrified. He told Roxy, “We must get these people to the caves and then we must get them to BQ8. That is the only way we can help them to reach the freedom of earth.”

Victor did not know what to think. George whispered in his head, “Remember, this is all just a dream.”

Victor looked about. He fell to his knees. “But I want to dream about Jossette.”

General Roxy had watched the scene with Jossette and how Victor was murdered. She had cried for Victor when watching the horror. And she had watched Jossette die in the hospital. Again she had cried. In her cage, General Roxy grabbed her pillow as she fell into her bed. “Oh my dear, such a tortured soul. And once I tortured you. But now I just want to cry for you.” General Roxy hugged her pillow to her stomach.

George whispered, “Victor, please do not go there in thoughts and dreams about Jossette.”

Victor took a deep breath as he held his arms up to the sky. “Or maybe I want to dream about when I went to the wall with the three thrones and Jesus hugged me in his arms and I hugged him in my arms and we told each other that the world would be alright, but we knew. God, we knew. And God himself offered to open the door of heaven to me but I would not pass. I would not leave Jossette. I would not leave Roxy.”

Victor whirled around as though in a wind. “But I walked through the door with Jesus. We both knew I would not stay but I walked through the door. And I saw heaven. I felt heaven. I knew heaven. And it was good. And God told me that now I would not want to go back for he did not want me to go back. But still, I went against God. I went against him and I returned. I returned from heaven. And now I can’t even find Jossette. I can’t find Roxy. I can’t even dream about them.”

George whispered in Victor’s head. “It is going to be okay.”

“How is it going to okay when every day I become more pitiful and some days I so fear for my sanity?”

George appeared from inside of Victor’s head so as to stand in front of everyone and Victor looked at George and George was Jossette. George felt his own face as he heard Victor whisper, “Jossette.” George stroked his own long hair.

George said, “No.”

But in Victor’s mind George was Jossette, and maybe he was Jossette. Victor grabbed Jossette into his arms but she vanished. George vanished back into Victor’s head. George said, “I am not Jossette. I can’t be Jossette.”

Deven said, “We all saw her.”

Nanny Ogleby said, “But we saw General Roxy as well and I know she was a hologram from Victor’s memory.”

Victor ran to the wall and clutched the swinging gates. “What if this is a dream from which I will never wake? What if I am like Amelia?”

George said, “Amelia is just a dream.”

The people standing around Victor could no longer see George as Jossette, but they could hear him from inside of Victor’s head.

Victor screamed, “No. Amelia is not just a dream. Amelia was a great General and she fought Belial with all her might. She might have won if not for the betrayal.” Victor screamed, “If only I had the strength to tear down these gates down. If this is a dream, why can’t I tear the gates down.”

Nanny Ogley said, “Remember BQ8. If we are on Pluto Viso BQ8 is our escape route back to earth.”

In her cage Roxy thought, “But Belial now knows about BQ8.”

Victor remembered General Roxy helping him to stand up and he stood up. Victor grabbed his head. He watched as General Roxy and the Mighty 50 vanished from his sight. He screamed, “What is happening to me?”

Nanny Ogleby grabbed Victor into her arms. “You are remembering. But I don’t think it is all a memory. I think we are in danger. We need to get to the caves. Please remember how to get to the caves.”

Victor looked around. “We must walk around the wall. It surrounds a portal. Come. Quickly.”

Nanny Ogelby released Victor but took his hand. She felt strength in his hand. Everyone followed Victor.

At first the path near the wall was wide and it was paved with concrete that was painted gold. But it began to narrow and it turned to gravel. Trees and bushes had grown right up to it and some limbs had to be dodged or pushed out of the way to walk forward. Everyone walked forward behind Victor.

Then the path turned to dirt and the sides began to steepen. The tops of tree were now off to the side of the narrow path. Everyone could hear the buzzing of the fighter spaceships. Victor said, “It seems to me there is a spell that can make us invisible. Belial’s forces do not yet know how to decipher the spell or reverse it. Oh God, please let me remember it. We did not use it much for fear that Belial might discover it. What was it.”

Constance said, “I only three spells that turn people invisible. They were taught to me by Hera.”

Victor said, “She was on the side of Belial in the early years. I am pretty sure it would not be one of her spells.” Victor thought. He bit his lips. “Okay, everyone take hands to form a circle. Do not try to listen for the spell.”

Everyone took hands to form a circle.

Victor asked, “Do you feel the warmth?”

They answered, “Yes.”

“Embrace the warmth. It will get hotter. Embrace the heat. Do not try to cool it. Not yet. Let me be the thermometer.”

They answered, “Okay.”

“It is going to get hot.”

Everyone began to sweat.

“Now it is going to get cold. Your sweat may actually turn to ice.”

“Okay.”

Everyone screamed in pain. But then the temperature returned to normal.

“We and our clothes are now invisible, even to Belial and his forces. But we still need to get to the caves. The spell does not last but about fifteen minutes. We must hurry. Let us now form a single line but each person hold the hand of the person in front and behind you. Do not break the chain.”

Everyone realized that somehow Victor was both in front of the line and at the end of the line.

Dioson whispered to Hannibal. “Do you realize the power of his magic? Who the fuck is he?”

Deven told Dioson, “He is someone who you had better not cross.”

Hannibal laughed. “No shit Sherlock. But no. He is our hope. I know that now. I would never cross him.”

Leroy told his mom. “It is strange to feel his power.”

Constance smiled. “Indeed. And to feel this knew coven, it makes me wet down there.”

“Mom.”

Constance said, “This chain we have formed is an alliance we must never break, even when our hands no longer touch.”

Leroy was not sure to whether his mom meant her words or not. Those kind of words came easy for her, but betraying people also came easy for her. Still Leroy hoped her words were true and not an act.

One of Belial’s fighter spaceships came down right at them. They stood still. They held their breath though the invisibility spell also hid their motions and vital signs and the sound of their voices. There was no way those in the spaceship could see them, unless the spell had been decrypted and broken.
