Hearthville Serial: Book 4 – Chapter 5

Excerpt:

Suddenly, in the grass, Daniel saw five snakes coming in his direction. “Son of a bitch.” Daniel reached for his revolver that was holstered beneath his white, loose fitting, shirt. As he pulled the revolver from the holster it snagged on his shirt and fell from his hand. The revolver fell to the ground as a snake crawled over its gray barrel and toward one of Daniel’s red sneakers. Daniel quickly jumped back from the slithering snakes but still they came in his direction. One of the predatory vermin appeared to lead the way. “Fucking hell, the snakes are chasing me.” Daniel ran but the snakes were fast. “This is unreal. This can’t be real.”

Billy transformed into the Legman. He ran toward Daniel. Reaching Daniel, he grabbed Daniel up into his arms. He quickly carried Daniel away from the snakes and sat Daniel down on the ground.

Chapter 5

The storm clouds whirled but at times the sun could be seen. A chase had ended and a battle between two men was about to begin.

George reached to grab Dioson’s muscular hand that with thick fingers held his leg. George screamed, “You space alien monster, let go of my leg.”

Dioson pulled George downward as Dioson climbed upward to press himself down on George. “You call me a Monster!” Dioson slapped George across his face. “You filthy human! There is no way I am letting you go. I’ve got you just where I want you.”

George winked. “You have got me where you want me? Yeah. You like filthy human men, don’t you. I bet right now your little pin dick is getting all hard.”

Dioson screamed. “I hate you. I’ve dreamed about killing you for so long. I just wish Hannibal could be physically here to enjoy this moment right along with me. Of course, I would guess his ghost is watching.”

“You stupid son of a bitch, his ghost has probably already been captured and placed in a cage.”

Dioson slapped George again.

“Pussy. Is that all you can do? Just bitch slap.”

Dioson formed a fist and eased his clinched hand back with the intent of punching George in the balls. But George railed upwards as though he were in a wrestling match, and a referee was about to tap down a three count. George’s legs wrapped around Dioson and Dioson’s fist became trapped between his own weight and George’s muscular stomach. George triple punched Dioson at his eyes and his chin. George then managed a flip so that now he was on top and it was Dioson beneath him. George continued to punch Dioson and Dioson’s mouth began to bleed and slobber.

George started screaming. “You and Hannibal killed Donny. You pieces of shit. You killed him. And all he was trying to do was help Victor. He died helping Victor.” George moved to put his knee at Dioson’s chin and began punching Dioson in the chin with his knee. George screamed, “If I had a gun with magic bullets I’d kill you. I’d kill you so freaking fast.”

Dioson laughed. “But no matter how hard you try to beat me to death with your fist and your knee, you can’t kill me. Your just making me horny. But I can kill you. And I will kill you.”

George rolled off of Dioson. He knew he needed to get to Arthur’s guns and magic bullets. Dioson grabbed George by the waist band of his shorts and by his leg. George bent Dioson’s fingers backward with a cracking sound to break Dioson’s hold on his shorts.

George screamed, “Let go of my leg.”

“No way. I’ve got you and I am not letting go.”

Then George and Dioson both heard the sound of a jug falling from the rocks above and bouncing through the growth. They looked up at Nat.

Dioson’s phone began to ring. Dioson moaned, “Don’t you hate when you are about to kill someone and your phone starts ringing. It is so irritating.”

George kicked Dison in the face and scrambled to begin trying to climb up the side of the rocky ravine. George looked up the steep slope and saw Nat above him. He saw how Nat struggled not to slide the rest of the way off the bolder. George yelled, “Man get out of here. It is dangerous.”

Nat slid and fell off the bolder. He fell just a short distance and then caught on the shrubbery that he had been trying to see beyond. Nat yelled. “Yeah. Well. I kind of have a situation.”

Dioson pulled out his phone and glanced at it. He answered the phone. “Madison, I am kind of the middle of something.”

Madison said, “Alice Malokey just talked to me and she is not happy. Do you have Paulster McCluskey prisoner?”

“I am not saying.”

“Yeah. Well. I am saying that if you do, then get him moved. A team has been ordered to move in on the Mausoleum.”

“Fuck.”

“Do your own clean up. I am not sending anyone to help you. Whatever you are doing, if you get caught, I will send someone to kill you. I am not sending anyone to help you.”

“Okay. Okay.” Dioson hung his phone up. “Shit.”

Dioson looked at George climbing up the ravine toward Nat. Dioson screamed, “You are saved this time but I am going to kill your Lazarus ass, even if it is the last thing I do.”

George said, “If I don’t kill you first.”

Dioson grinned. “Game on. We understand one another.”

Dioson took off running back toward the Mausoleum. George looked upwards toward Nat who was precariously hanging on to a bush for dear life. He judged how far Nat might fall. “Fuck. If you tumble from there it might kill you. Please don’t let go.”

“Letting go is not on my to do list but I can’t hang on forever.”

“I know. I am going to see if I can reach you and pull you back toward the bank.”

Nat said, “Maybe if I try. Let me move.” Nat tried to swing himself back toward the side of the ravine.

George saw the the bush was starting to give. “No. Stop. You are going to pull the bush up by the roots if you keep doing that. Let me try to reach you.”

Billy and Daniel jumped the fence. Billy started down into the overgrowth while Daniel remained on higher ground. Daniel screamed to Billy, “It will be shorter this way.”

Billy screamed back. “Watch out in the tall grass that you don’t get snake bit.”

There was a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder.

He quickly carried Daniel a distance, away from the snakes, and sat Daniel down on the ground.

Daniel looked at the strapping, muscular young man who had rescued him. Daniel asked, “Who are you?”

“Never mind.” The Legman rushed back to where the snakes had been. They were gone. The Legman rushed back to Daniel and waved his arms. “You will not remember.” The Legman changed back into Billy.

Daniel asked, “What just happened?”

Billy said, “You became sick. I am going to go on by myself to reach Nat.”

“No. You can’t.”

“I will be okay.”

Daniel started to stand but felt dizzy and fell back down.

Billy rushed into the shrubbery and changed back into the Legman. A short bit down the bank he stopped dead in his tracks. He carefully hid himself. He watched and listened as Dioson walked past. Dioson mumbled to himself. “Having my magic would help right now. I really should stop taking jobs from the Witches Council so I will no longer have to abide by their stupid rules.”

As soon as Dioson was out of sight, the Legman ran up through the creek. The Legman saw George struggling to get to Nat. The Legman literally flew past George and up to grab Nat. As soon as he had Nat safe, he flew to get to George and lifted him to be with Nat above the ravine.

George stared at the magical man who had saved Nat and had literally flew with him in his arms. Though George did not know the Legman he spoke with a familiarity, as though this had not been their first encounter.
George said, “We need to stop Dioson. I have reason to believe he has a man by the name of Paulster McCluskey held prisoner at the Mausoleum. We need to try to rescue Paulster McCluskey before Dioson is able to move him.”

The Legman guessed that George was not unaware of the way of the witches. The Legman explained, “If I go against Dioson his powers will be turned back on and any human in the area might be put in danger including Paulster McCluskey. And you!!!”

George nodded. “I know where there is a gun with magic bullets that I could use against Dioson. Could you get the gun and bullets for me to use?

“Sorry. You will have to get the gun and bullets yourself.” The Legman vanished.

Nat shook his head. “What the hell? He just vanished.”

George cocked his head at Nat. “In fairness he was flying when he rescued us. Are you really shocked more by his vanishing than his flying?”

Nat didn’t say anything.

Billy called up to George and Nat. “Are you two okay?”

Nat yelled down to Billy. “Yeah, little buddy. This man here saved me from falling.”

George stared at Nat and realized his memory had been altered. He didn’t say anything as he felt Victor emerging from his slumber. George did not have the energy to keep Victor dreaming. He gave in to allow Victor’s personality to awake.

Nat asked, “By the way, I know you don’t know me but I know you by seeing you around and through other people.”

George said, “Well, let me more formerly introduce myself.” George faded as Victor woke. Victor continue what George was saying, “I am Victor Duddley.”

“Well, thanks for saving me. I don’t know how you managed to climb up from the ravine as fast as you did and pull me to safety.”

“I am glad I decided to come up to the cemetery and uh, anyway, just happened to be at the right place at the right time.”

“Yeah. You saved me.”

Billy yelled, “Well, I am going to go back to Daniel and tell him that you are safe. I’d had one of my psychic episodes and got everyone upset. I thought for sure you were in danger.”

Nat yelled down, “Well I was. You were right.”

Victor looked down at Billy. Victor asked, “So who are you and him to Daniel Bare?”

Nat reached to shake Victor’s hand. With a smile Victor took his hand.

Nat said, “I am Nat Wilkins. My mom and Daniel are dating. Billy Bingo is my cousin. My mom and his mom are sisters.”

Billy screamed, “Daniel and I will walk up to where you two are. Wait for us.”

Nat screamed down to his cousin. “Okay.”
