Hearthville Serial: Book 5 – Chapter 4

Excerpt:

“It went well. I may become more involved than I intended. She wouldn’t give me details on what she was planning with the kidnapping of Paulstir McCluskey, but I understand the situation better. There are people in Rachel’s businesses who are taking advantage of Rachel being in the mental hospital and that is part of what precipitated events. I do not have a clue on how to become involved and protect Rachel’s interest because I will be rebuffed as strongly as Constance was by Rachel.”

“I don’t know what to tell you. I would offer to gather intel for you but I am afraid of causing Victor to start to remembering things.”

“I understand. Paulstir McCluskey’s memory has been wiped on some things but given his history with Rachel and you, I think if he could get back inside of Rachel’s inner circle, that might be helpful. What do you think?”

“He loves Rachel. I have no doubt about that. So yeah, you can trust him to try to help her. I don’t know whether you can trust him to be loyal to you or not.” George laughed. “You do understand what I am saying.”

Arthur laughed. “I understand but I do trust him. Given your history with Paulstir, how do you feel about him?”

“I wish him no harm, but I really do not want to talk about that part of my life.”

George called Arthur. “So how did your meeting with Constance Bare go?”

“Okay. Understood. So. Leroy and Paulstir were having a three way affair with some woman by the name of Misty Betrust. Leroy was using them and they found out about it and they turned against him. That is also part of what precipitated events. But the kicker is, that Leroy was in love with them.”

George cackled. “Yeah. I hope Leroy never decides that he is in love with me.”

Arthur said, “I want to ask you something.”

“Okay.”

“You do know who Steed is right?”

“I do but Victor does not. Judy does not. I don’t think Stewart really gives a fuck. Mom and dad are clueless.”

“Can I tell Steed about you?”

“I would rather you did not.”

“Steed does not really have anyone in this town watching his back. He really needs your friendship.”

George said, “It is tricky. Steed/Mark was there when the murder of Victor began. Victor does not need to remember that or what followed. Deven is becoming friends with Steed. He will be a good friend.”

“Deven could not have saved Billy Bingo the way you did?”

“Victor saved Billy Bingo. But remember when Dioson and Hannibal broke in on Steed, Deven was there. He killed Hannibal. Don’t judge Deven short just because he is different.”

“Okay. I am not meaning to judge Deven short but I feel in my bones that Steed needs Victor and you to help watch out for him. It was just luck Deven was able to help Steed when Dioson and Hannibal broke in on them. I guess in a way I am glad that it was Deven who killed Hannibal and not Steed, and yet still, it leaves me wondering if Steed would have been able to pull the trigger.”

“I can not be friends with Steed but I will try to watch out for him.”

“I am worried. I can’t explain it.”

“Well, now you have me worried. If Steed is in danger then Judy could be in danger.”

“Watch for them.”

“I will do my best. But back to the reason I called you. Do you have any idea where you want to located Constance’s club?”

“She wants it on the lake. I am not so sure.”

“There is a location that is between the Hollis Mud Track and the Hearthville Airport. It is not too far from the lake. It is twenty acres of vacant land. I can’t find who owns. It is sheltered through three different corporations.”

“Okay. I will have my people check on it. Hell. I may own it. I don’t know.”

George said, “I hope. That would make procuring it simple. But I guess the odds are against that. And also,” George stuttered, “and also if you and Constance don’t like the location that is cool.”

“It sounds like it would be a perfect location. That is enough acres to set up a truck stop if Mayor Hollis would approve both a truck stop and club in the same location.”

“I don’t know. I might could float the idea during our next poker game. We will see.”

“Okay. Do that.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.”
