Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Six

Excerpt:

Everyone left Rachel’s room.  She was left there alone except for Rita who had crept up to the door after the others had left. She didn’t go into Rachel’s room but closed the door except for a crack where she could watch Rachel.  Rachel stood up from her bed and looked into the mirror of the dresser as she walked toward it.  Then she pulled the naked pictures of Victor and Mark from the drawer. “I hate you Victor so much.  You and your big dick.  You have everyone fooled but you don’t have me fooled.  If I catch you fucking with my son or my niece, then I will kill you.  I will kill you good.  I will not let you ruin their lives.”

Chapter 6

The past … 2015

Rachel lay in bed with a bottle of liquor and a bottle of pills on her bed stand.  Rosanne came into her room.

Rosanne said, “Terence has kicked Lawrence out.  He has an outstanding job offer that he has decided to take.  He is moving to Savannah.  He seems content with the change.  He said he was already tired of Terence lauding her new found wealth over him anyway.  He wasn’t going to become Mister Terence.”

“I talked to him.  He seems satisfied that divorce is right for both himself and Terence, though I think he is trying to hide how heart broken he is.”

Rosanne said, “Probably.  Here is the thing.  He is going to be running the Canon Ball Campground and Trailer Park in Savannah.  He has asked me to work for him so he can spend more time with Tabitha.”

“What about Jossette and Roger?  Will they be moving to Savannah?”

“They will visit their father.  Terence has said that Tabitha is always welcome to visit Jossette and Roger.  She says she fully plans to treat Tabitha as a stepdaughter even though she and Lawrence will be divorced.”

Rachel said, “Terence is not a bad person.”

“No she is not.  The short affair Lawrence and I had was not planned.  Honestly, it wasn’t.  It just happened.  I am sorry that Terence was hurt.  I know that my moving to Savannah for Tabitha to be near Lawrence does not look right. People will think that it is I who wants to be near him. People will judge me badly.  But I don’t want Tabitha to go to Savannah without me.”

“You and I have been together for so long it is hard to believe this day has come.  I will miss you.  I love you.”

Rosanne smiled. “I love you as well.  And I say this with love.  You need to sober up before you do something even more crazy than accusing Mark of being gay and threatening your relationship with him.  He did not deserve that and I am so sorry that Rita instigated that.”

Rachel ignored Rosanne’s advice and her apology for Rita. “Will you visit me?  You and the girls.”

“You would actually want Rita to visit you.”

“Yes.”

Rosanne sat down on the side of Rachel’s bed.  She took her hand.  “Please sober up.  I beg you.”

“I will.”

“Sure you will.”

Roger and Jossette came into Rachel’s bedroom.  Rosanne stood up from the bed.

Jossette said, “Things have changed so fast.  It is unbelievable. Just two days ago mom and dad were so happy and now they are planning to divorce.  Dad is going to move to Savannah and we will be moving to Atlanta without him.”  Jossette held back her tears.”

“I know dear.  I talked to your father and Rosanne was just talking about it to me.  I am very sorry Lawrence and Terence could not work things out.”

Roger asked, “Is it okay if we stay here for the next couple of weeks?  The Atlanta mansion is not ready and dad needs the trailer in Savannah.  He is not rich like mom.”

Rachel nodded.  “Sure.”  Rachel thought a second.  “Paps was never rich.  Your father and I come from very modest means.  When I ran away to be with Arthur, Arthur and I were so poor then that we ate left overs thrown out of restaurants.  We ate out of garbage cans.  Lawrence has been that poor as well. Terence also.  But we were proud.  Don’t ever be ashamed of your father. Don’t ever be ashamed of having lived at the Hearthville Lake View Trailer Park.”

Roger said, “I will never be ashamed of my parents or where I come from.  You do not have to worry about that.”

Mark came into the room to hear what his mom was saying.  “I love that Trailer Park.  We had as many good times there as we did at this mansion.  I met Victor there when he was visiting Jossette.  He got me to going to the park with him.  God, all of us had some good times.”

Rosanne said, “The good times are not over.  Change is part of life.  It does not mean the good times are over.”

Mark said, “But I feel like they are.  I feel like I am in the middle of a storm that is growing and there is something even more awful on the horizon. Do you ever feel like that?”

Victor came into the room.  “When you feel like that, you must always trust in God.  You must trust in his love.”

Jossette took Victors hand.  With a smile, she held it tight.

Rachel burped.  “What a crock of shit.  Not all of us are born to charmed lives.  Some of us have to dig and claw for everything we get in this life.  We can’t trust in anything.  It is hard enough to even trust in ourselves as we face one storm after another.”

Rosanne said, “It would not hurt you to trust more in God and less in that bottle of booze and those pills you keep downing.”

Rachel smiled.  “Sure.  Whatever.  So Rosanne, when will you be leaving me.”

“I am giving you two weeks notice.  I can interview a new cook for you or you can interview one for yourself.”

“We can do it together.”

“Fine.”

Rita smiled.  She closed the door the rest of the way shut.

Rita went to  the guest bedroom where Jossette would be staying.  Jossette was unpacking her suitcase.   Rita didn’t knock but barged in on Jossette.  Jossette smiled as if she didn’t mind.  “Rita, how are you?”

“I guess Victor told you what I did.”

“Yes.  Mark and Victor told me why you and Mark are no longer dating.  I am sorry.”

“Are you really?”

“Sure.  I enjoyed when we double dated.”

“I guess.  But didn’t it sometimes feel like we were the third wheels on Mark and Victor’s date?  Have you never wondered if they are lovers?”

“No.”

“Have you and Victor ever had sex?”

“No, we aren’t ready for that.”

“Do you ever have thoughts of having sex with Victor?”

“Sure.  When the time is right.  I imagine Victor will be a sweet, gentle lover.”

“Have you ever seen Victor naked?”

“No.”

“Have you ever seen any boy naked?”

“No.”

“I have pictures of Mark and Victor skinny dipping together.  Do you want to see the pictures?”

Jossette thought a second.  She rolled her eyes back and forth.  She wrinkled her nose and giggled. “Maybe.”

Victor walked into what would be Jossette’s bedroom during the next couple of weeks.  He did not much like seeing Rita there with Jossette but he didn’t say anything that could be taken as rude.

Victor said, “Roger is coming with your last bag.”

“Okay.  Where is Stewart?”

“Avoiding work.”  Victor laughed.  “No. He left his football in the West Wing when Mark, he, and I were getting some old Limoges Dinnerware from storage that Ms. Rachel wanted to give your mom as a house warming gift.”

“Nice.  Limoges is expensive.”

Rita said, “It is not like Terence can afford to buy her own China for her mansion.”

Victor gave Rita a look and made a raspberry sound. Then he leaned in toward Jossette and handed her a tan, lace bra from her suitcase. He stared at the bra in Jossette’s hand for a second and said, “While in the West Wing, which is somewhat isolated from the rest of the mansion, Mark told me there is an old piano there. Rachel, nor anyone, much goes to that part of this mansion.  The piano is there, up in an attic room.  Mark said he is sure that Rachel would not mind you moving the piano to where you will be living.”

Rita said, “I wish I was rich so that people would give me free stuff.”

“I will check it out.”

Rita said, “I’ve seen it.  It is a beautiful piano.  I mean, it is an antique.  It may need some work on it but I like it.”

Victor noticed how nice Rita was talking with Jossette. He wondered if she was up to something.  But he figured it was possible she was just being nice.

Rita said, “I’ve been living in this mansion and the expensive apartment in Atlanta with Rachel.  Now I am going to be living in a trailer park and you will be living in a mansion.  Life is strange.”

Jossette said, “Roger and I will be visiting our father quite a bit and seeing you and Tabitha as well.  Tabitha will be our sister just as she is your sister.  I hope we can all be friends.”

Rita said, “Sure.  Friends.”  There was only a slight hint of resentment in her voice.

Victor said, “I have to get home.  I will see you tomorrow and we will look at that piano.”

“Okay.”  Jossette kissed Victor on the side of his face.

Victor kissed Jossette on her forehead.  “I love you.”

“Love you.”

Victor left.

Rita said,  “Come on down to my room.  I will show you the pictures of Victor and Mark naked.”

Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Five

Excerpt:

Meanwhile Victor stood in the kitchen with Rachel.  They stared at each other.

Rachel asked, “Did you arrange this?”

“No.  I had nothing to do with Lawrence and Terence being here or Tabitha coming into the kitchen when she did.  How could I?”

Rachel grabbed Victor.  She pushed him against the kitchen cabinet.  “Tell me the truth.”

Chapter 5

The past … 2015

Mark arrived back at the Ramsey Mansion in Hearthville after a two week stay with his father.  His father was in a hurry for a business meeting with Mayor Hollis Bare.  After helping Mark to carry his bags to the porch he rushed back to his big, black car and drove off.

Mark went inside and looked around.  “Is anyone home?”

Mark knew that he and his father were running late but still he expected that he would be greeted.  Mark went to the kitchen where Rosanne was cooking.  “Where is everyone?”

Rosanne did a fake smile at Mark.  “Good to have you home.”  She then turned back to stir her soup.  “Your mom is up in her bedroom either watching ‘The Three Stooges’ or porn.  To her, it is all the same.  Roger and Stewart are down at the beach.  Tabitha is in her room reading.  Rita is off plotting something evil no doubt.  I have no idea where Victor and Jossette are.”

“They knew that I was coming home today, didn’t they?”

“They were all here waiting at 8:00 AM but then your father called and said you would be running late.”

“Oh well.”

“So how was your stay with your father.”

“I met a girl. Her name is Clarice.  She is two years older than me but we had a blast together.”  Mark grabbed an apple and took a bite. “I think I may lose my virginity to her.”

“Well, if your hymen breaks, I will alert the ‘National Enquirer.'”

Mark laughed.  “You are funny.  When I met Clarice I used my middle name.  I introduced myself as Steed.  I don’t know why I haven’t been using that name.  It makes me sound more manly.”

“Is Clarice after your money the way Rita was until she decided that you are queer and that she hates you?”

Mark shrugged.  “Clarice comes from a rich family.  I may be the one who is after her money.”

Rosanne said, “That is smart.  You never know when your parents are going to cut you off without a dime.”

“Why do you continue working for my mom.  She is sometimes mean to you.  Hell, after Rita did what she did I wanted you fired.  I am mean to you more than I would like to confess.”  Mark hugged Rosanne.  “I am sorry about that. I know that you aren’t a bad sort. Victor told me about the time he has been spending with you and that I should appreciate you more.  I know that he is right about that.”

“I’ve been taking night classes in computer science.  Victor sometimes comes over and helps me with my homework.  I like Victor.  But your mom and Rita still seem to hate him.  I don’t understand it.  To me he has become such a doll.  He and Jossette have been taking Tabitha roller skating.  Victor’s mom Ellen and Judy have been taking her to book club meetings. I understand why you love Victor.  I don’t understand why Rita hates him.”

“When Victor caught Rita trying to frame Jack Minx for stealing her purse while at the same time she stole his money, that set Victor off.  He is very protective of Jack.  Jack is gay and people do pick on him.  That makes Victor angry.”

“I like that about Victor.  He is protective of the people he cares about.  Victor introduced me to Jack. I listened to Jack sing.  Oh my God, he is really good.  He is putting together a heavy metal band but I wish he would go more mainstream.”

“I like heavy metal.  But yeah.  I know what you are saying.  Jack Minx is good.  From what Victor said though, some of the kids try to pick on Jack really something awful.  They thought it was funny what Rita had done.  When Victor first told me, I didn’t believe him.  I wouldn’t believe that about Rita.  How could I be so blind?”

“Rita is my daughter.  I love her. But her father was that way.  Just bad to the bone.  Always was but I didn’t see it at first.”

“Tabitha is so different.”

“Tabitha is my darling.  She is my baby.  But I think Rita knowing that Tabitha is my obvious favorite sets Rita off even worse.  Then you started taking time up with Tabitha with your chess games.  Rita is very jealous of Tabitha.”

“Should I ask who Tabitha’s father is?”

“Victor figured it out the first time he laid eyes on her.  It is scary how smart he is.  But at the same time so wonderful.  Victor and I have talked about Tabitha.  He understands my predicament.”

“Which is?”

“Tabitha’s father is married.  I don’t want to break his marriage up.  Still, I hate that Tabitha doesn’t know what a wonderful man her father is.  I hate that she doesn’t know about her half-siblings.  But I don’t want to hurt her father.  What he and I had was not a mad affair.  Even if there was a chance he might have left his wife for me, we wouldn’t have lasted.  But I do love him.  I do not want to hurt him.”

Mark thought a second. “How could Victor so quickly figure it out?”  Then Mark’s mouth fell open.  “How could I not figure it out? Oh fuck.”

“What?”

“I was talking to Aunt Terence and told her how Victor had acted when he first met Tabitha.  I told her how Victor thought he knew who her father was when he first saw her.  Shit.”

“In the last year or so I have intentionally kept Tabitha away from Terence and Lawrence.  It has only been in the last year or so that the resemblance has become so obvious.  Still, I had not realized it was that obvious until Rachel told me that Victor recognized the resemblance.  Terence knows what Rachel looked like when she was young.  She knows what Lawrence looked like when he was young.  So the incident with Victor has worried me.”

“I hope I did not pique Terence’s interest but I am afraid that I did.”

“I need to quit this job.  I don’t want Lawrence hurt.  It is just I have worked for Rachel so long.  And Arthur does pay me well.  He thinks the good pay discourages me from hurting Lawrence.  He doesn’t know I would never intentionally hurt Lawrence for the world.”

Mark said, “I am sorry.  It never crossed my mind that Lawrence would ever have cheated on Terence with you and that he might be Tabitha’s father.”

Rosanne said, “Maybe you are overreacting.  Maybe I am overreacting.  It has always been easy enough to keep Terence away from Tabitha.  Terence has never shown any interest in my children.  That is not likely to change.”

Terence and Lawrence came knocking on the kitchen door.  Then they let themselves in.  Terence said, “Hey Rosanne, is Rachel around.  Lawrence and I are going to New York and we would like for Roger and Jossette to stay here a couple of weeks while we are gone.”

Lawrence said, “Hey Mark, Terence told me how much you like the mansion Terence is building.”

“It is wonderful.  I like the colonial style with the large columns.”

Rosanne said, “The intercom is not working.  I will go get Rachel.  Mark, will you watch the soup and make sure it does not stick.”

“Sure.”

Rosanne rushed to get Rachel.

Mark said, “So you are going to New York?”

Terence said, “I have some business there and we will be doing some shopping.”

“Cool.”  Mark stirred the soup.

Rita came into the kitchen.  “Where is mom?”

“She went to get my mom.  The intercom is not working.”

Terence asked, “So are you Tabitha?”

“No.  I am Rita.  Tabitha is down in our room reading.”  Rita walked over and looked at the soup.  “I am starved.”  Rita walked over to get a bowl and some soda crackers from the cabinet.”

Victor and Jossette came into the kitchen.  Jossette asked, “Mom, dad, what are you doing here?  I thought you were still in Atlanta.”

Lawrence said, “We came to pack some stuff from the trailer.  We are going to be going to New York for a couple of weeks.  We want you and Roger to stay here with Rachel while we are gone.  That is if it is okay with her.  I haven’t asked her yet.”

Tabitha came into the kitchen.  “Is that soup ready yet.”

“Yeah.  It is done.”  Rita reached over and turned the eye to low.

Rosanne came back into the kitchen.  She saw Tabitha standing there in the kitchen.  “Tabitha, will you run down to the garage and see if I left my pocketbook in the car.”

“Sure.”

Terence looked at Tabitha.  She looked at Rosanne.  She looked at Lawrence and saw the look of horror on Lawrence’s face.  He had realized the resemblance as well.

Terence said, “I will be going to New York by myself.  I will be calling a divorce attorney.”

Lawrence screamed, “What?”

“I thought a trip to New York might save our marriage but now I see we have no marriage to save.  I will not tolerate a man who cheats on me.”

“Fifteen years ago.”

“You cheated with Rosanne.  You cheated with your sister’s cook.”

Rachel walked into the kitchen to hear Terence’s comment.  Rachel said, “In fairness she is a hell of a cook.”

Rosanne said, “Thanks.”

Terence fled out the kitchen door.  Lawrence chased after her.

Rachel said, “I gather Terence realized the resemblance.”

Rosanne nodded.

Crying, Tabitha fled from the kitchen.

Rita said, “I do hope Tabitha goes to live with Lawrence.  It will be cool to have a room of my own.”

Jossette looked at Mark.  “Tabitha is my half-sister.”

Mark said, “Yes.  It was a secret.”

Jossette said, “Show me to her room.”

Mark and Jossette went to the basement apartment where Rosanne lived with her daughters.  Rosanne followed.

Jossette asked, “Did dad know?”

Rosanne said, “No.  He didn’t know.  It has only been recently that Tabitha truly began to favor the Ogleby family.  I thought I could keep her away from Terence and Lawrence. That was stupid of me.”

Jossette said, “Poor Tabitha.  She discovers that dad is her father and he just leaves her standing there.”

Rosanne said, “I wish Terence had not behaved that way but I understand her anger.  I guess she might think that Lawrence was keeping Tabitha a secret but he wasn’t.”

Jossette said, “But he was keeping the affair a secret.”

“The affair has long ended though I will always love Lawrence.  I think to Lawrence what we had was just a fling.  And that is okay.”

Rosanne opened the door to Tabitha’s room.  Tabitha looked at her mom.  “I had fantasies of when I would meet my father.    In none of those fantasies did he walk off and leave me.”

Mark said, “I am sorry.  He doesn’t know you yet.”

“When he chased after his wife and left me standing there, he lost that chance.  I will never have anything to do with him.”

Jossette said, “And me.  I am here.  You are my sister.”

Rita stormed into the room and shoved Jossette back.  “No.  She is not your sister.  She is my sister.  You stay away from her.  Your entire damn family stay away from her.”

Tabith said, “Rita.  No.  Rita, you will always be my sister.  You don’t have to be mean to Jossette.”

Rita said, “Mom.  I want us out of here.  I want us the hell out of here.  This family does not love us. They do not care about us.”

Mark said, “I care about Tabitha.  She is my cousin just like Roger and Jossette.”

Rita attacked Mark.  “You son of a bitch.  You will not steal my sister.  You will not turn my sister against me.”

“I am telling you the truth.”

“Lawrence and Terence always come through the front door.  Why would they come through the kitchen door?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told Terence about Tabitha, didn’t you?  She came into the kitchen hoping to see Tabitha.”

“I did not tell Terence or anyone about Tabitha.”

“Liar, liar, pants on fire.  You with that big cock that my son and niece do desire.”  Rachel thought about kissing Victor on the mouth.  She backed away from him.  She said, “I hate you.  I want you to stay away from my son and niece.”

“No.  I will not stay away from them.”

Hearthville Serial: No Condoms – Chapter Four

Excerpt:

Victor looked around.  He saw that Rachel and Arthur had a look of horror on their faces.  “I thought I saw a resemblance but maybe not.  I am sorry that I spoke out of turn.”  Victor guessed that Rachel’s brother Lawrence was Tabitha’s father but he was not about to suggest that to Mark.  Whether what he thought he had figured out was true or not, he guessed some secrets are best kept.

Tabitha said, “Tell me who it is that you think I favor.”

Rachel knew that Tabitha favored a younger version of herself.  She wondered with the age difference if there was enough of a resemblance for Victor to notice.

Victor said, “You favor all the most beautiful women.  You have the classic ‘IT’ look.  Your father must surely carry the genes of beauty and aristocracy.”

Chapter 4

The past … 2015

Mark and Victor went inside.  They sat down on the couch and turned the television on to watch a rerun of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Rachel came down the stairs in a rather dramatic fashion, dressed as though she were about to go to some high society event.  She sat down in a chair that was turned to face a side view of the black couch with bright yellow round pillows on each end.  Arthur stood behind the couch facing the staircase and the television.

Rachel said, “Mark,  son, I love you and you are always welcome here.  You will always have a room here.  I am sorry I allowed myself to be manipulated by Rita.”

Mark stood and walked to stand beside the chair where his mom sat.  He knelt and kissed her on the side of the face.  “I love you mom, but don’t ever turn against me again.  When I tell you something, you believe me.  If I were gay, I would not be ashamed of it.”

Rachel nodded.  “Understood.”

“I am going to stay with dad for two weeks and then I will be back here.  When school starts back, I will enroll to go to school where you have the apartment in Atlanta as always.”  The Atlanta Apartment was a 5,000 square foot town house with maid quarters for Rosanne and her daughters.  It was paid for by Arthur.

“I thought the plan was for us to move here and live here full time.”

“No.  We will continue using the apartment in Atlanta that is near dad and near where Terence is building her mansion.”

Mark stood up from kneeling next to his mom.  “Victor, I will be back here in two weeks.  I do enjoy my summers here and spending time with you.  I am sorry I changed my mind about wanting to live in Hearthville full time.”

“That is cool.  I will be visiting Jossette in Atlanta.  I will visit you as well.”

Rachel gave Victor something of a dirty look.  She thought to herself, “Yeah, you and your big dick.”

Rita came into the room.  “Mark, I am sorry.  I don’t want us to break up.”

“Our relationship is over.”

Tabitha came into the room.  That was the first time Victor had laid eyes on her.  “Oh my God, you are so beautiful. Who are you?”

Rita said, “She is my idiot half-sister.  Mom doesn’t know who her father is.  She is the product of a drunken orgy.”

Tabitha was wearing a halter top and Victor eyed the diamond shaped birthmark on her neck.  He remembered seeing a similar birthmark on the back of Rachel’s shoulder when they had been swimming.  Then Victor compared the features of Rachel and Tabitha.  Because of the age difference there was no striking resemblance between Rachel and Tabitha.  It was not like they were twins.  But they did favor enough to guess that Rachel and Tabitha were related.  Then Victor considered that Tabitha probably favored Rachel’s brother Lawrence more than Rachel. Victor shook his head no.  “Anyone with eyes knows who your father is.”  As soon as the words had slipped out of Victor’s mouth, he regretted what he had said.

Mark stared at Victor.  What was Victor seeing that he didn’t see? He guessed Victor knew someone who she favored.  Mark asked, “Who?”

Tabitha grinned.  She laughed. “You had me going for a second. You are so full of blarney, but I do see why Jossette dearly loves you.”

Rachel smiled at thinking how Victor admiring Tabitha’s beauty was sort of him admiring her beauty.  She liked the compliment.

Rita stood with an expression of anger and resentment.  She said, “Gay men do like women who would make good drag queens.”

Tabitha said, “Whatever.  Mark, I will miss you.  When you get back we must finish that chess game we have been playing.”

“We will.  I will be back in two weeks.”

Victor said, “Tabitha, why have I not seen you around here before.”

Rita said, “Oh my God, she is such a bookworm.  She stays down in that drab basement where mom is forced to live and she reads all day.  That is when she is not at the library.”

“I do love reading.”

Victor said, “Reading is wonderful.  But you must live.  You must live your life to explore the wonderful blessings that God has given you.  This world is better than any book that you might read.  Don’t stay hidden in your room.  There is a big world out there to explore with people to meet.”

“I am trying to do better.  I am just very shy.”

Mark said, “Shyness is something that Tabitha and I have in common.”  Mark knew how much Victor and Jossette had worked to bring him out of his shell.  “I’ve told Tabitha how much being friends with you Victor has helped me.”

Rita said, “I am shy as well.”

Victor said, “Shy like a snake sneaking about and slithering around.”

“Victor, I hate you.  I hate you more than words can describe.”

“When you hurt Jack Minx, the feeling became mutual.  Then this ridiculous stunt you pulled trying to hurt Mark with his mom, unbelievable.  What is wrong with you?”

Rita ran from the room screaming and pretending to sob. “I hate him.  I hate him.”

Tabitha grinned.

Victor laughed.  “I think she hates me.”

Arthur said, “I would not be shocked if she does not fancy fantasies about you and your big cock.  Rita may be in love with you or in love with the idea of being in love with you.  Still, she doesn’t want to have those thoughts.”

Victor shrugged.  He wasn’t sure what to say.

Tabitha said, “I guess I better go see about her before she starts destroying our room and ripping up our clothes.”

Tabitha began to leave the room.  She looked back at Victor.  “I will try to not be so shy in the future.”
