Rogun and those with him hear noise on the other side of the mine shaft. They hear a motor running. They hear a clanking sound and at times a banging noise.
Mrs. Haskel says, “I guess they are digging us out.”
Mr. Haskel asks, “So what should we do? Are they the good guys or are they the mercenaries?”
Trace says, “Mercenaries. You can’t escape Madison Grant. I am sorry. I am going to have to abandon you.”
Rogun says, “Sure.”
Mrs. Haskel says, “But I don’t understand. We are nothing to the people who bombed the village. They can’t know who we are. They have nothing to gain from hurting us. I just don’t understand. Why would the so called mercenaries be out there and trying to reach us?”
Trace says, “That is a damned good question and I have no idea what the answer is. Rogun is special. I felt that in my bones from the first time I saw him but I don’t know why he is special.”
Rogun laughs in disgust. “I am apparently not special enough. You are abandoning us.”
Trace moans, “Fuck. You just don’t understand. Madison Grant is not a human. She is a witch.” Trace grabs his flashlights from Mr. and Mrs. Haskel. He takes off running. He screams back, “I am truly sorry.” He runs deeper into the cave and vanishes from sight.
In the pitch black Rogun finds the warm, loving hands of his parents. He takes their hands into his and he whispers to them, “Whatever happens, I love you. Please know that I love you. And know that if I am killed, don’t grieve for me too long. I think maybe death isn’t really the end so there will be no reason to grieve.”
Mrs. Haskel says, “We are going to be okay. Didn’t you say earlier that today is not our day to die.”
Mr. Haskel says, “Witches. That dude is off his rocker. Just mercenaries and they have no reason to hurt us.”
Rogun and his parents stand as the boards are broken away from the mine shaft. Bright flashlights shine in their eyes.
Madison Grant says, “My name is Madison Grant. You don’t have to be afraid. We will not hurt you. We will let you go. We just want to talk to you.”
The Haskels remain silent.
Madison uses magic and causes the three of them to vanish from the cave and to her large tent. They stand in the center area of the tent though there are canvas compartments off from the center. Inside the tent is a grand oak table for eating. It is surrounded with oak chairs with over stuffed red velvet backs and cushions. There are bowls in the center of the table with grapes and strawberries. A few feet from the table is a hot tub. Inside the hot tub the water bubbles. From the hot tub steam rises. In front of the hot tub is a large old green chair that looks somewhat out of place. The hand rests at the ends of the arms of the old chair are wood. The wood looks like bone; skeleton.
A large fan is situated where it is blowing air across the room and into the faces of the Haskels. At first there is something tranquil in the feel of the air and the white noise from the fan. Then there seems to be an eerie, inaudible soft voice coming from somewhere in the room. The sound blends with the hums from the fan.
Rogun’s mother asks, “What happened? How did we get here?”
Roguns father says, “It all seems rather queer doesn’t it. We were there and now we are here.” He looks about. “Queer, indeed.”
The fan blows Rogun’s hair as he looks around the tent area attempting to find exits. He then looks at Madison. She looks familiar but at first he doesn’t know why. He does think it is odd to consider such things at a time like this. Still, he thinks how pretty she is. Though she is dressed in military fatigues she is attractive.
The fan is blowing Madison’s blond hair. And as she enjoys the feel of the air she lifts her head back and pushes her chest out. Mr. Haskel sheepishly notices her large breasts. His eyes widen with something of a smile. Mrs. Haskel pokes him with her elbow and shames him with a glare of disapproval.
Suddenly Rogun realizes why Madison looks familiar. She had been in his dream. In his dream she was the witch, a prisoner, with whom he’d had sex and then she had escaped.
Mrs. Haskel says, “I told my sister that she shouldn’t drag me to see those movies about that Harry, Hermione, and Ron. I told her that they would give me nightmares. Now here I am.”
Madison laughs. “You are not in a dream but don’t worry. Your memories will be erased and you will be sent on your way. But I want to get a bit of information from your son.”
Madison directs an assistant to take Mr. and Mrs. Haskel to a tent where food has been prepared. Madison says, “Feed them. Treat them well. Help them to get their truck cranked and then send them on their way.”
Mrs. Haskel says, “Come son. Come with us.”
Madison says, “No. He is staying with me. Sources say that he has some information that we need. If he cooperates then we will free him.”
Mr. Haskel says, “You must be confused. You must think my son is someone else. What information could Rogun know?”
Madison says, “If we have been given some bad information, we will figure it out.”
Rogun says, “When my parents are ready to leave I want to say bye to them. I want to see them in the truck and driving toward freedom.”
Madison smiles. “Of course. No problem.” Madison considers that she once knew a young man who looked like Rogun. She wonders if Rogun favors the man because of genetics or reincarnation.
Mrs. Haskel says, “Why can’t he talk to you and then the three of us leave together? I think you will quickly be satisfied that he knows very little. He was always a C student.”
Madison thinks a moment. She scratches her head as she gives Mrs. Haskel a sort of cock eyed, “you’ve got to be kidding,” look. Madison almost laughs. She fights her desire to laugh, and projects a stern expression. She looks at her assistant. Then she looks at Rogun, “Is that the way you wish this to be handled? Do you want the three of you to leave together?”
Rogun looks at his mom. He looks at his father. He looks back at Madison. Rogun says, “I have no idea what information I have that might help you. In case my ignorance makes you angry, I’d rather my parents be safely on their way before you question me.”
Madison nods. She wants to keep the Haskels in case Rogun might refuse to cooperate, but the Witches Subcouncil have already commanded that Mr. and Mrs. Haskel be freed. When a member of the Witches Council, Mardston Wallace, heard about the military operation against the village, he had a fit. He was furious about what Madison had done. The vote taken by the subcouncil for the operation had been taken without his knowledge and his friend Preacher Paulo had been put in danger.
Mardston Wallace had organized the mission with the help of Preacher Paulo to prepare things for a mining operation he was planning. Madison and Mardston had a history of not getting along and bumping heads. Mardston had mixed feelings about keeping the cursed earth witches cursed. He also feared Madison would commit mass genocide against them if she ever thought she could do it in secret or under the cover of other military operations. The very thought of that happening worried Mardston. Plus he didn’t like his business operations being mucked up by some “government” junkie having withdrawal pains, unable to acquire her next power trip.
Preacher Paulo had already been on the phone with Mardston and screaming about how three of his missionaries were missing. When Mardston got off the phone with Preacher Paulo he called Madison and made clear to her that the missionaries were not to be hurt. He then quickly made contact with the subcouncil about the operation. The subcouncil partially agreed with Mardston and demanded that when found Mr. and Mrs. Haskel were to be freed. They weren’t as demanding about Rogun because there were pictures of him going in and out of Darious’ shack. They felt that Rogun might have information that would help Madison to locate Darious and his paintings.
Madison had not fully informed the subcouncil about the paintings. They did not know about the sacred well being in any of the paintings or about Rogun being painted as though he were at the sacred well. Madison had simply told them that Darious seemed to know too much about the space alien witches and the souls communicating with him could not be silenced except by killing Darious. Madison declared that in his case a memory spell would not work. At first they would not give approval for they doubted Madison had properly attempted a memory spell. But then she added to the request that he was known to associate with a werewolf who had done things to cause her to be on a kill list and together they might be part of a conspiracy. The vague conspiracy charge was enough to have him added to the kill list and for her to receive approval for the attack on the village. Some on the subcouncil suggested the entire village might be part of the conspiracy.
Mr. and Mrs. Haskel are led out of the tent. They look back as Madison pushes their son down into the old green chair. Mrs. Haskel cries, “Please don’t hurt him.” Madison’s assistant kept them walking away from their son but he can’t make them walk fast. They walk slowly. Really slowly.
Mr. Haskel says, “I bet that ratty chair has those kind of bugs that make a person itch.”
Mrs. Haskel says, “I wouldn’t be surprised. And what kind of person has a hot tub in their tent?”
Mr. Haskel says, “Back in the states I fancied I wanted to buy us a hot tub. But you would have none of it.”
Mrs. Haskel says, “Of course not. Only over sexed people have hot tubs. That is what I think.”
About seven feet away from the tent Mr. Haskel looks back at his son and Madison through the tent opening. He starts to turn back to walk toward his son but Madison’s assistant gives him a hard shove to keep him walking in the opposite direction.
Meanwhile in the tent, Rogun thinks he hears the chair whisper, “I like you in my lap.”
Madison says, “Your parents love you very much.”
Rogun says, “I am sure you have parents who also love you.”
Madison grins. “My father is a space alien witch. My mother is an earth witch. In the 1700’s she tried to have the both of us burned at the stake.”
Rogun says, “I thought they mostly hung witches.” He adds, “So the memory spells did not work on your mother.”
Madison says, “She is not among the cursed, but regardless, I do not want to talk about my mother.”
Madison snaps her fingers. Roguns pants and underwear and shoes vanish. He is nude. Sitting in the old chair, Rogun bashfully covers his cock and balls.
Madison pretends his nudity is an accident. She says, “I was trying to make that old chair more comfortable for you. My magic does not always work the way I expect.” She adds a vague comment that it is not at all clear to Rogun. “Like with your friend Darious, magic does have its limits. Memory spells do not always work.”
Rogun says, “Darious is not a friend. I just met him.”
Madison snaps her fingers so that a desk and a computer with a flat screen monitor appears in front of Rogun. A picture of a painting appears on the monitor. It is the picture of Rogun at the well. Madison says, “We estimate this painting was done four years ago.”
Rogun says, “Darious has dreams. The dreams are an inspiration for his artwork. I can’t really explain why he dreamed about me.”
Madison says, “You are a very handsome young man. Even I may have dreams about you. But I doubt my dreams would place you at the sacred well and where you know which brick to remove to reveal the staircase. When were you there?”
Rogun says, “I have never been there.”
Madison asks, “Do you have the maps to the key and to the spaceship?”
Rogun answers, “The only thing I can figure is there is someone who favors me and Darious has me confused with this other person. Notice that the man in the painting has a birthmark above his heel. You see the birthmark of the dagger.”
Madison says, “So the man in the picture has the birthmark that a lot of earth witches have.”
Rogun points to above his heels. “I have no such birthmark. I am a Christian. I am not a witch.”
Madison sees there are no birthmarks on Rogun. She says, “A person can be a Christian and a witch. One thing has nothing to do with the other.”
Rogun says, “So says a witch who was almost burned at the stake.”
Madison says, “So you have never been to the shack where the sacred well exists?”
Rogun says, “No.”
Madison says, “A secondary psychic like your friend…”
Rogun says, “I don’t really know him.”
Madison says, “Darious has his dreams because souls on the other side are causing the dreams. They think you or someone who favors you is going to go to the sacred well and discover the ancient maps—if you or they haven’t already. It might be by chance that you end up there. So the question is, do we want to kill you so that chance is eliminated or do we want to use you to find the sacred well. I will have to talk to one of my bosses.”
Madison snaps her fingers. A collar appears around Rogun’s neck. A chain is locked to a gold collar with silver spikes. The chain is bolted to the ground inside the tent. The chair Rogun has been sitting in turns into a naked Trace Smith who collapses prostrate down on the floor. Rogun falls so that he is seated on Trace’s soft cock and balls. He quickly moves to unseat himself from Trace’s lap area.
Trace also has collar around his neck. He is also chained to the ground inside of the tent.
Madison says, “Dogs, don’t go anywhere?”
Rogun growls, “I am not your dog.”
Madison causes a feed bowl and a watering dish to appear at Rogun. She says, “You two enjoy your food and water.”
Rogun says, “Don’t forget. I want to see my parents safely out of here.”
Madison says, “Sure. I don’t think you’ve been totally honest with me but I will allow it.”
Rogun says, “I have been honest.”
Madison snaps her fingers and vanishes from the tent.
Rogun says, “So you were also captured?”
Trace says, “Yeah. I ran right into two mercenaries. One of them turned me into a chair and brought me here.”
Rogun asks, “Why does she have us naked?”
Trace says, “Probably to humiliate you. Or to make you feel more vulnerable.” Trace laughs. “Or maybe to get me all horny.”
