Chapter 3

Rogun’s parents are not where he had left them. Rogun calls to Preacher Paulo, “Where are mom and dad?”

Preacher Paulo says, “They have gone back to the camper. I told them to take you seriously. If it is a false alarm, we need the drill practice. That is what I told them.”

Rogun says, “Thank you.”

Rogun and Preacher Paulo both see the approaching helicopters. They hear an explosion coming from the direction of the shack where Darious lived. His home. They see a bright burst of flames where the shack had been. They hear gunshots.

Preacher Paulo screams, “Fucking hell. This is real. Get to your parents. Get the hell out of here.” Preacher Paulo runs to where he had already instructed the other missionaries to prepare for an escape.

The Russian and French soldiers are in a state of total confusion. Because it will be hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys they have been told to stand down and to retreat. And for the retreat they are not even sure what direction they need to drive their convoy.

The Russians hear Zel on the radio. “Get your convoy moving on the East Road toward the Red Sea. Tell the French to do the same. That will move you away from the enemy.”

Rochelle comes on the radio. She repeats in Russian what Zel has said. A Russian friend yells to Preacher Paulo the direction to get the missionary convoy moving. He relays the directions.

As the convoys start moving, a missile is dropped on the bathroom and shower facilities that the missionaries had built for the villagers. Bombs are dropped on the shacks of the village.

When the bombing stops, mercenary fighters start moving in to take control of the village. With his heart racing in excitement and fear, Rogun reaches his parents. His mom is screaming in tears. His father is trying to crank the truck to pull the camper. It will not crank.

In a hushed voice Rogun tells his mother. “Stop crying. It is going to be okay. Today is not our day to die. Father, mother, get out of the truck. We are going to have to leave it.”

Rogun’s parents do as he says. Rogun whispers, “Follow me. Make as little noise as possible. We are going to get out of here. Okay.”

Rogun takes his father’s hand and his father takes the hand of his wife; Rogun’s mother. Rogun leads them down into the ditch that he had explored when they first came to the village. The ditch leads into the old bunker from WWII where Rogun and Edmund and encountered the Russian soldiers. Rogun leads his parents into the bunker. From the bunker there is a trapdoor down into a cave. Rogun opens the trapdoor. There is no ladder down to the cave. It is about a seven foot drop. Rogun and his father take his mother’s hands. They partially lower her down into the cave so there is only a short drop when they release her. Rogun’s father holds onto the wood frame of the trap door and eases himself down. Rogun follows similar to the method that his father used. Only Rogun does it with one hand while using the other hand to close the trap door above him.

They silently huddle together in the pitch black cave. They hope the mercenaries do not plan to occupy the village but will move out. They know they can’t stay hidden in the cave forever.

Rogun’s mother says, “I want to try calling Edmund.”

Rogun tells his mom, “I can’t say I fully believe what I am about to say. I know it sounds crazy. But that enemy we are facing out there may not even be human. They may be space aliens.”

Rogun’s father says, “You can’t be serious.”

Rogun says, “We have an enemy out there. We don’t know who they are. We do not know what they are capable of doing. I am going to wait an hour and then I am going to go out there. Hopefully they will be gone. If they aren’t, I am going to try to get our flashlights and some food items from our camper. This cave has got to have another exit. Maybe it will take us far enough away from the mercenaries so we can can escape.”

Rogun’s father says, “We can wait here longer than an hour before going out.”

Rogun says, “I’ve got to be at the top of my game. I can’t be tired. And I want it to still be dark.”

Rogun’s mother says, “I pray they will be gone. Even with flashlights, if we go deeper into this cave we might get lost.”

Time ticks. Hands on the clock move. Nearly an hour passes.

Rogun’s phone rings. He jumps. Then he quickly answers his phone. It is Edmund.

Edmund says, “We’ve been trying to reach you but you weren’t answering. Preacher Paulo has been frantic calling his superiors. Where are you? I thought you would be coming up behind the other trucks.”

Rogun says, “We haven’t been on the move so we weren’t in a dead zone. I guess the cellphone signals were jammed or something.”

Edmund says, “I guess. But, where are you?”

Rogun says, “The truck would not start. An enemy might be listening, but I can tell you that we are where you might think about naked Russian soldiers. I am not sure how long we will remain here.”

Mr. and Mrs. Haskel question in one voice, “Naked Russian soldiers?”

Zel comes on the phone Edmund has handed to her. She says, “Edmund is talking to Preacher Paulo.”

Edmund realized Rogun’s clue and tells Preacher Paulo that his brother and parents are hidden down in the old bunker from WWII. Preacher Paulo knows about the bunker. Preacher Paulo makes a call.

Zel says, “I don’t know what to do. I want to come back to the village and help you get out of there.”

Rogun says, “If we get moving in a run, you will not be able to find us.”

Zel says, “I’ve got a good nose and great hearing. Don’t be too sure. Don’t be too sure that the enemy can’t find you as well. I am coming back to help. Word is that there is an occupying force in the village.”

Rogun says, “Shit. Well, at least now I know what I will be up against when I sneak out of our hiding place.”

Edmund takes his phone back, “Preacher Paulo is talking to someone who might be able to help. You are not going to like it but I think the person is Trace. He is still in the area. Rochella is trying to convince her commander to send a force to take the village back. Zel tells her that the force would get slaughtered. Zel wants to rescue you all, all by herself. I don’t know. I am going crazy here. I am scared for you all.”

Rogun hears movement in the bunker above them. Rogun whispers, “Someone is above us. I’ve got to hang up.” Rogun hangs the phone up. He turns his phone off. His parents turn their phones off. They quietly move deeper into the cave away from the trapdoor. The trapdoor opens.

Trace Smith crawls down into the door opening. He pulls the door closed. He points a flashlight at Rogun and Rogun’s parents. Trace says, “There is another bunker beneath a shack not far from here. There are new supplies in it. I am there with two Russians who were on a secondary mission away from the village when the bombing started. We are going to need to try to get to the other bunker. Okay?”

Rogun says, “I know we can’t stay here. By the way. Glad to see you come to help us. Thanks.”

Trace says, “Sure. This cave confuses me but I think it exits close to the other bunker. I think we should follow the cave rather than leaving the bunker through the ditch. There are mercenaries searching the area?”

Rogun asks, “Searching for what? What is this about?”

Trace says, “I heard a couple of them mention something about an artist by the name of Darious. I’ve heard some other things but I don’t really know.”

Mr. Haskel says, “Rogun said something about space aliens. That is ridiculous, isn’t it?”

Trace smiles at Rogun as he points his flashlight in Rogun’s face. “They’ve been on earth going back to the days of Noah. Not a recent invasion but no, not ridiculous.” Trace says to Rogun, “I told Preacher Paulo that you are not ordinary, but I don’t think he had to be told.”

Rogun says, “Trust me. I am as ordinary as it gets. To me, this seems totally unreal.”

Rogun and his parents stand up. They follow Trace as he uses the flash light to try to figure his way through the caves and mine shafts that intersect. After a while, at one of the cross points, they sit down to rest. Trace unfastens one of three canteens from his belt and hands the canteen to Mrs. Haskel. She takes the canteen and takes a drink. She hands the canteen to Mr. Haskel who takes a drink. He hands the canteen to Rogun who doesn’t take a drink. He hands the canteen back to Trace.

Trace questions, “Not thirsty?”

Rogun says, “No. Not until we get out of this cave.”

Trace says, “You don’t trust me. Do you?”

Rogun says, “It is not that. You came to our rescue. Why wouldn’t I trust you.”

Trace says, “Since I am not sure I haven’t gotten us totally lost in this cave, I am not sure I would trust me either.”

Rogun says, “No. It is going to be okay. Worst case we will have to go back to the bunker. I remember the turns. I am pretty sure we are going in the right direction toward the shack, if it is the one I believe you were talking about.”

Trace says, “Okay. So do we go straight or do we turn at one of these mine shafts?”

Rogun says, “Go right.”

So they stand up and go right. They walk a ways until they come to the end of the of mine shaft. It has been boarded up.

Trace attaches his flashlight to his arm. Then Trace pulls a couple of flashlights from his belt. He turns them on and hands them to Mr. and Mrs. Haskel. They step back to light the area where Rogun and Trace begin their work pulling at the boards. They start with the more rotted and smaller boards that break more easily away from the obstacle.

Though the area is somewhat lighted by the flashlights being held by Rogun’s parents, as Trace is working he points his flashlight toward Rogun’s face. He then points the flashlight toward Rogun’s bare, tight, somewhat muscular chest. He points the flashlight toward Rogun’s size 28 waist. He lowers the light toward where Rogun’s pants and underwear have slipped so that he can see Rogun’s butt crack. Trace whispers to Rogun, “Even at a time like this, there is something about you that makes me so damn horny. If your parents weren’t standing there I think I would kiss you.”

Rogun whispers, “The kiss would just be the start, wouldn’t it.”

Trace smiles. “With Edmund it wasn’t a kiss I desired.”

Rogun and Trace pull at the boards. The smaller ones have broken away but there are still larger boards blocking their escape. Rogun takes the flashlight from his mother and examines the boards.

Rogun says, “There is sand on the other side so we are going to pull the boards back in our direction. Even if I can break them out of the way, we may have to dig our way out of here.”

Trace’s phone begins to ring. Preacher Paulo is calling.

Preacher Paulo asks, “Have you reached them? Have you got them back to the safe bunker?”

Trace says, “We were trying to make our way from the bunker through a cave and mine shaft back toward the safe bunker. The mine shaft is boarded up. We are trying to get out. Rogun thinks there is sand on the other side of the boards. He is probably right.”

Preacher Paulo asks, “If you talk to the Russians do you think they can figure out where you are at and assess the situation from outside the mine shaft?”

Trace says, “The mercenaries are busy searching the area. I was lucky I wasn’t caught. Even if we get out of here, we will be lucky if we aren’t caught. Should I really ask the Russians to take that kind of risk.”

Preacher Paulo says, “I guess not. So do you think that odds are that you will be caught and handed over to Madison Grant. I’ve been told that she is over the operation.”

Trace raises his voice. “What the hell is wrong with that woman?”

Preacher Paulo says, “I’ve been talking to Mardson Wallace. I’ve let him know how angry I am and he sounded just as angry. He is talking to the subcouncil that approved the operation. I am doing my best to make sure that if you are caught then you will be released alive. So if you are caught. Just surrender. Do not try anything stupid.”

Trace says, “How do I know these three have not been put on a kill list? How do I know that if I am caught with them I will not also be put on a kill list?”

Preacher Paulo asks, “So like what? You want to walk away from them and not try to help them escape.”

Trace says, “I thought these were just mercenary soldiers. I didn’t know that Madison Grant and the Witches Council are involved.”

Rogun looks at his parents and they look at him. Together they whisper, “Witches Council?”

Preacher Paulo says, “Try to get the exit open but otherwise just stay where you are. Mardston Wallace is on your side. Do you understand?”

Trace says, “I understand. I also understand Madison Grant is not on our side. But I’ll stay with them. I will continue to try to get them to the safe bunker.”

Preacher Paulo says, “Thanks. And understand that your helping them means something to me. I will continue to be your advocate.”

Trace says, “Understood. I will try not to let you down.”
