Is the ‘Dead Internet’ theory suddenly coming true?

The linked article was written: 4-16-2024

The article is about how AI is replacing humans with content creation.  We all see it and also see how the AI content seems to be able to manipulate the algorithms to show up at the top of browse results.  But here is the thing, those browse results meant to influence if not brainwash us are hurting the platforms.

CNN gets lots of browse views on youtube but actually makes very little money on youtube.  And if youtube treated CNN like it treats real humans, CNN would hardly be seen at all in browse views.  The article pushes the argument that some people, especially  the elderly, don’t always realize that they are looking at AI content, but on some level they do.  That said, if it is truly informative or entertaining they don’t care.  But if is boring and repetitive and designed to show as many ads as possible, just like if it was done by a human, it gets turned off fairly fast.

So, back to the main point, is the internet becoming less human and more bot/AI?  Does that make it more difficult for humans to make money online?  I would say probably, but most influencers are not AI/bots.  They may use AI/bots but the majority of the content product the viewer sees is still the influencer and it is the influencer that is supported by their community either through ads or tips.  It is not much different from a branded newspaper using a wire service for a lot of their articles and not just their local reporters.

Before going to the article, this is what google AI says on the subject:

While the “dead internet” theory, where the internet is dominated by AI-generated content and bots, is not guaranteed to become a full reality, the increasing sophistication of AI, particularly large language models like ChatGPT, does raise significant concerns about the potential for a substantial portion of online interactions to be non-human, making the idea increasingly plausible depending on how platforms and users manage AI usage
