Mexican president signs law opening oil industry

Notes:

The measure breaks a monopoly that the state oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), has held since 1938.

Oil output has dropped from 3.4 million barrels per day in 2004 to 2.5 million today because of what the bill’s supporters say is underinvestment. Mexico currently imports half the petrol it consumes.

Opinion:
Although the change may be the beginning of bringing Mexico into the 21st Century, it is strongly opposed by those who hold on to the vestiges of failed communism.

GDP Reported to Have Grown 4.1% in the 3rd Quarter of 2013.

That was the strongest growth rate since the fourth quarter of 2011 and beat economists' expectations for an unrevised 3.6 percent rate. The economy grew at a 2.5 percent pace in the April-June quarter.

Business and Consumer spending both helped drive the increase in GDP.

A large build-up of inventory accounted for much of the increase in GDP growth in the July-September quarter. That has left economists anticipating a sharp slowdown in the pace of inventory accumulation, which would hurt fourth-quarter growth.

Aggregate consumer debt increased in the third quarter by $127 billion, the largest increase seen since the first quarter of 2008. As of September 30, 2013, total consumer indebtedness was $11.28 trillion, up by 1.1% from its level in the second quarter of 2013. Overall consumer debt remains 11% below its peak of $12.68 trillion in 2008Q3.

Mortgages, the largest component of household debt, increased by 0.7% in the third quarter of 2013. Mortgage balances shown on consumer credit reports stand at $7.90 trillion, up by $56 billion from their level in the second quarter. Balances on home equity lines of credit (HELOC) dropped by $5 billion (0.9%) and now stand at $535 billion. Household non-housing debt balances increased by 2.7%, with gains of $31 billion in auto loan balances, $33 billion in student loan balances, and $4 billion in credit card balances.

Outstanding student loan balances reported on credit reports increased to $1.027 trillion as of September 30, 2013, a $33 billion increase from the second quarter.
 The 90+ day delinquency rate increased, and is now at 11.8%
 Balances on credit cards accounts increased by $4 billion.
 The 90+ day delinquency rate on credit card balances fell to 9.4%.

Auto loan originations increased in the third quarter of 2013 to $97.4 billion, the highest level since 2007Q3.

 The percentage of auto loan debt that is 90 or more days delinquent continued its downward trend, and now stands at 3.4%.
 The number of credit inquiries within six months – an indicator of consumer credit demand – increased. There were 168 million inquiries in 2013Q3, compared to 159 million inquiries in 2013Q2.

Canada's prostitution laws struck down by high court

In a 9-0 sweep, Canada's Supreme Court struck down all restrictions on prostitution and invited Parliament to come up with other ways to regulate the sex trade.

OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada struck down all current restrictions on prostitution on Friday, including bans on brothels and on street solicitation, declaring the laws were unconstitutional because they violated prostitutes' safety.

The sweeping 9-0 decision will take effect in one year, inviting Parliament to try to come up with some other way to regulate the sex trade if it chooses to do so.

From National Enquirer - They were making fun of Shirley MacLaine but I think she is cool.

There is a little silly gossip thing where they are making fun of Shirley MacLaine for picturing someone in a past life, but what sensitive hasn't felt like they've had a glimpse of something about someone from a past life.  It could be real or it could just be imagined, but to some of us it is just a fun thought.  Well, usually it is a fun thought though sometimes it leaves the sensitive with the thought, "I seriously didn't want to picture that in my head."

So Shirley MacLaine is having a business meeting with a mother, son duo on a film project.  She supposedly blurts out, "“It’s great how well you and your mother work together. It’s an inspiring collaboration, but not surprising, because, well…you both were actually lovers in another life!”

That supposedly got the lovers--I mean mother, son duo--into a tizzy.  I doubt they were that upset.  Shoot, I'd wanted to know what Shirley MacLaine felt she had a glimpse of regarding who they were in a past life.  Just fun.

It would have even more entertaining if she had continued, "And you were both dudes.  She was the top and you were the bottom.  And it was the wild west and...

Al Goldstein, Pioneering Pornographer, Dies at 77

Be sure to read original article.  It is good.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/20/nyregion/al-goldstein-pioneering-pornographer-dies-at-77.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0

Notes From Article

Died on Thursday at a nursing home in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. He was 77.

The manifesto in Screw’s debut issue in 1968 was succinct. “We promise never to ink out a pubic hair or chalk out an organ,” it read. “We will apologize for nothing. We will uncover the entire world of sex. We will be the Consumer Reports of sex.”

He went bankrupt in 2003.

Alvin Goldstein was born on Jan. 10, 1936, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, one of two sons of Sam and Gertrude Goldstein. His father was a news photographer.

After his marriage failed, Mr. Goldstein drifted. According to Gay Talese’s book “Thy Neighbor’s Wife,” Mr. Goldstein ran a dime-pitch concession at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair; sold rugs, encyclopedias and his own blood; drove a cab; and landed a job as an industrial spy, infiltrating a labor union. That experience so appalled him that he wrote an exposé about it for The New York Free Press, a radical weekly.

The article bombed but he became friends with Press editor Jim Buckley.  They invested $175 apiece and began Screw Magazine in November 1968: a 12-page rag to the underworld featuring blue-movie reviews, nude photos, a guide to dirty bookstores and a field test by Mr. Goldstein of an artificial vagina.

Mr. Goldstein’s empire declined even before the decline of Penthouse and other sexually provocative magazines. The Village Voice and other newspapers, many of them free, siphoned off the ads for escort services that were Screw’s mainstay. Mr. Goldstein failed to to position himself in Internet pornography, but even if he had it is doubtful his "keep it real" formula would have worked.

Opinion:

Porn went from it being important to have social redeeming value to the government leaving those in industry alone who didn't try to have a social or political voice or try to have social redeeming value.

Back to Notes:
In quick succession starting in 2003, Mr. Goldstein lost his company, his Florida mansion and a series of subsistence jobs in New York, including one as a greeter at the Second Avenue Deli. In 2004, while living in a homeless shelter, he was arrested and charged with stealing books from a Barnes & Noble store.

Opinion:
He lived a full, happy, and very tragic life.  Though he survived early government attacks against him, when the government had to play by the rules, later, he may have been one of the first victims of a government out of control where the NSA and Homeland Security considers the Constitution a joke.  He may have been one of the first victims of the government's behind the scenes economic warfare strategy, using illegally collected personal and business data, to destroy enemies of the Democrat and Republican Totalitarian agendas.

Opinion:

The last time I was on Reddit, one of the pieces I was reading was beyond stupid.  Then I glanced over some of other crap and it was obvious the old Reddit I once liked no longer exist.  There is this article about one topic where the people at Reddit have lost their minds.  It is actually worse than this one issue.  What I was reading that made my hair stand on end was a bunch of greasy-assed creeps hoping all the baby boomers drop dead.  Yeah, the new Reddit is heavy into censorship and yet that crazy shit was not moderated or deleted.

Anyway, here is an article:

Reddit has banned climate change deniers, and ripped its own reputation to shreds

Note From Article:

The Reddit moderator says climate “contrarians” were too often expressing “uninformed and outspoken opinions”, and so the site decided to adopt a much more “proactive moderation”.

Diabetes Drugs Affect Hearts of Men, Women Differently
http://t.healthyliving.msn.com/diseases/diabetes/diabetes-drugs-affect-hearts-of-men-women-differently

Notes From Article:

Researchers examined how three commonly prescribed treatments for type 2 diabetes affected 78 patients who were divided into three groups. One group took metformin alone, the second group took metformin plus rosiglitazone (sold under the brand name Avandia) and the third group took metformin plus Lovaza, a type of fish oil.

Although metformin had positive heart effects in women, it caused the heart metabolism of men to burn less sugar and more fats. Chronic burning of fat by the heart results in harmful changes that can lead to heart failure, said the researchers, from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Opinion:
Note that metformin over a period of time also can deplete b12 levels.  If a patient notices a change in their walk or begins getting a bitter taste in their mouth they need to discuss with their doctor the potential of making a change in medications.

Mini Boost In Bitcoin Usage Rise With More Related Apps On Google (GOOG) And Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Stores

I was early on a big follower of bitcoin but I don't know.  One of the benefits of it was a belief that it wasn't trackable, but it is trackable.  One of the benefits of it was that you could use it without government forcing banks to put higher processing fees in place such as with adult content; but banks are already showing their muscle in setting rules in conjunction with the government.  Then you have China that has already basically outlawed it when--unless I am mistaken--there were many Chinese in and out of government that supported it.

It is cool that it is a system, for now anyway, that adjust price/value fluctuations.  When the dollar goes up in value you don't see consumer prices pushed down / fractionalized.  It will be interesting to see how sales in bitcoin  are driven up or down by the value fluctuations in bitcoin.  The value of bitcoin is not just in currency trades but also in product trades.  I like that.

Still, is bitcoin something that will become part of the economy and last for our lifetime or is it just a temporary thing?  I don't know.

I am trying to sell digital e-books on amazon so I am not adverse to digital but there is something in me that respects tangible.  If the world suddenly powered down in chaos would bitcoin be a currency of last resort?

I think the answer is no.

Westerns like to paint the drunken Indian as having a great thirst for corn whiskey.  What the westerns don't explain is that corn whiskey was not just for consumption but was a primary unit of barter in the old west.  If a time of chaos ever comes it will be food and whiskey and gasoline and guns and ammo that will be the primary units of barter.  The secondary units of barter would be clothes, gold, silver, jewelry, parts, & even some things today we look at as garbage.  The least valuable units of barter would be currency of any kind, which mostly would have less value than the confederate dollar at the end of the civil war.

Now you might argue that the world would never sink into such a level of chaos.  You might say that sounds like a bunch of survivalist drivel.  The point is, the value of any unit of barter should be based on its worth in bad times even if those bad times never come.

I haven't convinced you yet?  Consider that the government with a stroke of a pen could declare the dollar worth only 1 penny in a new currency as it starts to outlaw the old currency.  Consider that the government with a stroke of a pen could outlaw bitcoin.  Consider the government could outlaw ammo.  Consider which of those three things would still have value even if the government outlawed it.  Ammo would probably even increase in value if the government outlawed it.

Bottom line...

I love digital but I respect tangible.

Barnes & Noble shares fall on SEC probe

The news came in its quarterly report filed after the market closed Thursday.

.......

As more Americans take on-call part-time jobs in their struggle to survive, the government reports:
U.S. unemployment rate hits five-year low of an official 7% which of course in no way is the actual unemployment rate.  It is a total bullshit number that in no way reflects the real economy.

The central bank has been buying $85 billion in Treasury and mortgage-backed bonds each month to hold long-term borrowing costs down "in a bid to spur a stronger economic recovery."  Actually they have been doing it to keep the super rich, well you know, super rich.  If  they had actually been aiming for an economic recovery the number of US Banks which support local businesses would be increasing and not decreasing.

Factoid:

There are 6,891 banks insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the regulator that insures banks against failure.  When we still had a functioning economy that had not been fucked over by the elite, and their insane Homeland Security Police State, we had over 18,000 banks.

As far as back as federal data goes, which is 1934, that is the lowest number on record, the FDIC said.

.....

One-third of bank tellers rely on public assistance

These are the kind of stories being used to push for a higher minimum wage.  In the past, at times, I have supported a higher minimum wage and sometimes I haven't.  It is one of those where I care about workers but....  I think, higher incomes are better achieved through tax structure and not all together through a minimum wage.  I think a minimum wage is needed but beyond a certain level it is counter productive.  It is better to have a tax structure where when businesses can afford to pay better wages then they are given a tax advantage to pay those better wages to their lowest paid workers.  At the same time, the tax structure should be to discourage business from giving their highest paid workers an amount that suggest corruption at the top of the company; where it appears the stock holders are having their investment pilfered through sweetheart salaries.

From article:

It’s not as if banks can’t afford to pay their tellers more, judging from a surge in executive pay: Compensation for the top 50 financial chief executives rose by 20 percent in 2011 and 26 percent in 2010, the study notes.

Back to my ramble:

Which I think supports my notion that a more structured income level, with less disparity, is best achieved through a sound tax structure.  It is a given that top level employees should make more than lower level employees but that disparity should not be so extreme that it does not really make sense from either a business stand point nor a more general economic stand point.

From Article:

So what does the average teller at Wells Fargo make? Less than $11 an hour, or about $22,600 a year, according to job site Glassdoor.com. While that’s above the federally mandated baseline wage of $7.25 an hour, the pay is low enough to qualify a family of four for food-stamp benefits.
