Germany Working to Restore Art on Berlin Wall - world's longest open air gallery

Emergency paint restoration begins on some Berlin Wall murals, which form the world's longest open-air gallery. Though part of the 100 mile long wall was destroyed with the thankful fall of the wall, part of the remains of the wall was painted by artist. The Western Side of the Wall already contains lots of colorful pictures, the Eastern Side of the Wall was mostly an untouched canvas for artist some 20 years ago in 1989.

The German reunification started in the summer of 1989, when Hungary decided (May 2) to dismantle the Iron Curtain and open the borders (August 23), causing an exodus of thousands of East Germans (September 11) going to West Germany.

The political crisis that followed the Hungarian events, lead to GDR's first free elections on March 18, 1990 and to the negotiations between the GDR and FRG culminated in a Unification Treaty, whilst negotiations between the GDR and FRG and the four occupying powers produced the so-called "Two Plus Four Treaty" granting full sovereignty to a unified German state, whose two halves had previously still been bound by a number of limitations stemming from its post-WWII-status as an occupied nation. The united Germany remained a member of the European Community (later the European Union) and of NATO.
