Article: Other Site: Could News Corp Become a Victim of New Media?

Interesting things in article:

- That Myspace is a drain on News Corp pulling 15% off the profit margin.

- Book Publishing has also taken a major hit.

- Cable is a plus though television has taken a hit.

- Considering the Economy News Corp isn't really in that bad of shape.

Pretty much everyone and their brother has an opinion on News Corp and Myspace and that probably is really pissing a man like Rupert Murdoch off. As any business person knows, everyone has a lot of free advice and pretty much all of it is worth about what it cost.

Will myspace ever be a money maker? I don't know. Will it continue losing traffic. Again, I don't know. Do I know anything? These days, not a hell of a lot.

Can myspace be transformed from a semi interactive profile site into a virtual game platform? Do the people running it even want to go that route?

I don't like the term new media or social media. The terms are as meaningless as if they had been used to describe the CB radio fad.

Marketers like to paint something new but a lot of so called Social Media is nothing really new from what Yahoo/companies they took over were doing in the early days and actually in some ways doing better than the current popular and over hyped sites.

And remember AOL. AOL was a combination information service / social platform / and dial-up service. Like Twitter hopes to accomplish, they had businesses lined up doing deals with them and what they called Channels. They had/have a huge subscriber base.

The key to them all is chat. People like to talk. And sometimes, even communicate.
