Abe Lincoln and Joshua Speed

Because Joshua Speed and Abe Lincoln were both womanizers, many have tried to rewrite history and say it was not uncommon for two men to sleep in the same bed for economic reasons and therefore their sleeping in the same bed does not mean they had a homosexual relationship. But the catch is, while Lincoln may very well have been too poor to afford his own bed, Joshua Speed was anything but poor. His reason for having Lincoln in his bed had nothing to do with money. Joshua Speed, like Mary Todd - Lincoln's other husband, was rich. Sleeping in Joshua Speed's bed and Mary Todd's bed was for Lincoln a way to fame and fortune. Wherever Lincoln fell on the Kinsey Gay - Straight scale, Lincoln was an opportunist.

There is evidence that Lincoln did in fact love Joshua Speed. Lincoln fell into a depression after Joshua Speed returned home to his family. And I don't doubt that Lincoln probably loved Mary Todd. They had four children together.

And it doesn't really matter where Lincoln falls on the Kinsey Gay Straight Scale, but it does amaze me how so many Americans put Lincoln who was responsible for so many American deaths up on a pedestal when in fact they know almost nothing about him.

When we idol worship historical figures like Lincoln without really knowing that much about them, you know, like what next, elect someone to the White House that we know nothing about!!!

Note: While President, Lincoln often slept with his body guard Captain David Derickson while his wife was away. And yet even with that knowledge, most text being written today are trying to say that was normal behavior back then. They point out Captain David Derickson was married and had a house full of children as though that has anything to do with where a person falls on the kinsey scale.

Course when you look at Lincoln, you have to consider a different sexuality scale; the ugly scale. Man or woman; Lincoln's suitors must have really been turned on by ugly.

*I did not mean this to suggest that Lincoln should be judged for being gay. The point is, that people have gone out of their way to keep the historical Lincoln in the closet and to create an icon that for the most part is not real.
