It is with immense emotion that we sadly report the Georgia Theatre burned down Friday morning, June 19. There are a lot more questions than answers right now and we will do our best to keep the public informed as we learn more.
We appreciate all of the support that the great folks of Athens have provided and the additional messages received from wonderful patrons from around the world.

Brooks & Dunn calls it quits after 20 years
Article: Other Site: Brooks & Dunn calls it quits after 20 years
From Article:
Brooks, 54, and Dunn, 56, were struggling solo artists when Arista's Tim DuBois urged them to join forces in 1990. Together they've scored 23 No. 1 hits.
They've recorded 10 studio albums, the latest 2007's Cowboy Town.
Brooks & Dunn will release a greatest-hits album on Sept. 8 and tour one last time in 2010.

Brooks & Dunn split after 19 award-winning years
Article: Other Site: Brooks & Dunn split after 19 award-winning years
From Article: Brooks & Dunn were the top duo with the Academy of Country Music from 1991 to 1997 and then again from 2001 to 2008. Brooks & Dunn were named entertainers of the year in 1995, 1996, and 2001. They won album of the year for their debut disc "Brand New Man" in 1992 as well as single of the year for "Boot Scootin' Boogie." And "Believe" took the song of the year prize in 2005.
Brooks & Dunn enjoyed far less success with the Grammys, having to compete there with groups as well. They took home only two of these awards over the years – in 1993 for "Hard Workin' Man" and again in 1996 for "My Maria." They also won favorite country group at both the 2005 People's Choice and Billboard awards.

What was behind the decision? I couldn't find an article that gave many details. Maybe a farewell tour is easier to sell. I know that sounds kind of jaded of me, but I know how tough things are for even the "Golden" among us right now. Anyway, they are good and they will missed if they do decide to retire after 2010.
Bruce Springsteen - Hungry Heart
Cherokee Nation
When this song is put in perspective from the past and the present it has a strong message that goes way beyond the Trail of Tears. Even as we love people from different cultures I can't help but think how everyone is paying a heavy price for the abuses of power taking place in the name of Globalism. It seems to me people around the world are paying a heavy price for the Age of the New Colonialism our leaders call Globalism. The new abuses of power aren't so different from the old abuses of power as the *"Ant People" try to build toward the One World Government that Napoleon and Hitler dreamed of.
Reference from Fiction:
*Ant People = Colony Builders; Corporations building Colonies/Offices across the globe to consolidate power to serve the secret, hidden "Queen Ant"

The recording industry's efforts to compensate for lagging CD sales by promoting hikes in royalties rates, suffered another serious setback yesterday in the US as a panel of judges ruled mechanical royalties rates should stay put.
Apple's threat earlier this week to shut down its iTunes service cast a brighter spotlight on the Copyright Review Board's royalties review process than at any time since 1909. As of this morning, the CRB hasn't actually publicly announced its decision yesterday, although the Associated Press learned from sources who participated in the meetings with the three-judge panel that it decided not to raise the rates for mechanical reproduction royalties above the current base rate established in January 2006.
That rate now remains set at 9.1 cents per song, or 1.75 per minute for any song lasting longer than 5:12, whichever is higher.
As most iTunes customers know, Apple sells songs for a flat fee of 99 cents -- a price with which most customers now seem quite comfortable. Although Apple has yet to validate this information officially, based on testimony it's given in the past, it's believed the company already pays record companies between 70 and 75 cents for each track iTunes sells. Those companies were believed to have proposed a mechanical royalty rate increase to 16 cents per track, which could have cut into Apple's already razor-thin margins by as much as 27%.

About Whiskey Rebellion:
___
The new Federal government, at the urging of the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, assumed the states' debt from the American Revolutionary War. In 1791 Hamilton convinced Congress to approve taxes on alcohol and carriages. Hamilton's principal reason for the tax was that he wanted to pay down the national debt, but he justified the tax "more as a measure of social discipline than as a source of revenue." But most importantly, Hamilton "wanted the tax imposed to advance and secure the power of the new federal government."
Congress designed the tax so smaller distillers would pay by the gallon, while larger distillers (who could produce in volume) could take advantage of a flat fee. The net result was to affect smaller producers more than larger ones. George Washington, the president at the time, was one such large producer of whiskey. Large producers were assessed a tax of 6 cents per gallon, while small producers were taxed at 9 cents per gallon. But Western settlers were short of cash to begin with and, being far from their markets and lacking good roads, lacked any practical means to get their grain to market other than fermenting and distilling it into relatively portable distilled spirits. Additionally, whiskey was often used among western farmers as a medium of exchange or as a barter good.
The tax on whiskey was bitterly and fiercely opposed among the Cohee on the frontier from the day it was passed. Western farmers considered it to be both unfair and discriminatory, since they had traditionally converted their excess grain into liquor. Since the nature of the tax affected those who produced the whiskey but not the people who bought the whiskey, it directly affected many farmers. Many protest meetings were held, and a situation arose which was reminiscent of the opposition to the Stamp Act of 1765 before the American Revolution.
From Pennsylvania to Georgia, the western counties engaged in a campaign of harassment of the federal tax collectors. "Whiskey Boys" also made violent protests in Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.
George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, remembering Shays' Rebellion from just eight years before, decided to make Pennsylvania a testing ground for federal authority. Washington ordered federal marshals to serve court orders requiring the tax protesters to appear in federal district court. On August 7, 1794, Washington invoked martial law to summon the militias of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and several other states. The rebel force they fought was likewise composed of Pennsylvanians, Virginians, and possibly men from other states.
The militia force of 12,950 men was organized. Under the personal command of Washington, Hamilton, and Revolutionary War hero General Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, the army assembled in Harrisburg and marched to Bedford, Pennsylvania the site of Washington's headquarters, then on to western Pennsylvania (to what is now Monongahela) in October of 1794. The rebels "could never be found," according to Jefferson, but the militia expended considerable effort rounding up 20 prisoners, clearly demonstrating Federalist authority in the national government. The men were imprisoned, where one died, while two, including Philip Vigol (later spelled Philip Wigal), were convicted of treason and sentenced to death by hanging. Washington, however, pardoned them on the grounds that one was a "simpleton," and the other, "insane."
Only two were actually arrested and jailed: judge Robert Philson and devout Quaker Herman Husband. Philson was released by Washington, but Husband died in jail before he could be released.
The rebellion and its suppression helped turn people away from the Federalist Party and toward the Democratic-Republican Party.

Herman's Hermits - No milk today
This song makes me think of when I was three and at war with our maid. I seriously wanted my chocolate milk and the milkman had not delivered it. There was a lot of stuff going down between us but that was the final straw when she would not allow me to call the police to report my chocolate milk missing. :)
Then when at some point she quit or whatever and was replaced with a different maid, geeez, I missed that woman. :-(

I did my best to notice
When the call came down the line
Up to the platform of surrender
I was brought but I was kind
And sometimes I get nervous
When I see an open door
Close your eyes, clear you heart
Cut the cord
Are we Human or are we Dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we Human or are we Dancer?
Pay my respects to grace and virtue
Send my condolences to good
Give my regards to soul and romance
They always did the best they could
And so long to devotion, you taught me everything I know
Wave good bye, wish me well
You gotta let me go
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human or are we dancer?
Will your system be alright
When you dream of home tonight
There is no message we are receiving
Let me know is your heart still beating
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
You've gotta let me know
Are we human or are we dancer?
My sign is vital, my hands are cold
And I'm on my knees looking for the answer
Are we human
or are we dancer?
Are we human or are we dancer?

Is it a business model that will work for everyone?
Independent Bands which draw as many listeners as "Big Labels" already are feeling screwed in the deal. They aren't being offered the same advertisement sharing deal.
Quote:
By reducing use restrictions -- and not charging subscription fees -- MySpace is betting that its 120 million members will be just fine with ads.
That is questionable as pretty much everyone who is not in the business has been programmed by the media to view most internet ads as spam. So the question is will advertisers get their money worth from placing ads with the music.
I don't really have a clue to whether what myspace is planning will work or not.

RIP Teddy Pendergrass
R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, who had been one of the most electric and successful figures in music until a car crash 28 years ago left him in a wheelchair, has died of colon cancer. He was 59.
Before the crash, Pendergrass established a new era of R&B with an explosive, raw voice that symbolized masculinity, passion and the joys and sorrow of romance in songs such as "Close the Door," "It Don't Hurt Now," "Love T.K.O." and other hits that have since become classics.

I thought this was pretty cool for a young band. I think they were playing for a party but don't really know. At first they seem kind of tentative. But by the end they had a different feel. Like after a light bulb flash the guy breaks and points and says that is my mom while they continue playing. Not sure why they aren't getting more youtube views. I think they deserve a bump up.

Many have made the statement that they can't sing. Yes, they can sing. Singing is not about hitting notes. It is about projecting noise that entertains whether it is only for ones own pleasure or for the pleasure of other people. This notion that people shouldn't sing if they can't hit the notes right is crap.
Lounge Singers often are great talents as far as hitting all the notes right. I totally respect people who can do that. But there is a reason that great Lounge Singers will spend their lives singing in lounges and with only limited success.
Singers who create new art, even it is not the best art, often are more entertaining than people who hit every note right. John and Edward can and do sing. They just don't hit the notes right. That is still singing.
On whether people who can't hit the notes right should win a singing contest or talent contest, it depends on whether you view singing as an artisan craft or a creative art that puts fun ahead of convention. As someone who enjoys making up songs but has very little if any musical talent, you know where I stand.
Contest aside, I imagine someone's got to be considering movie scripts for them.
