Boyfriend
excerpt:
Expecting
his family in the kitchen, Victor went down stairs. He was surprised no
one was around the breakfast table. "How odd." He
called
out but no one answered. He walked around the bottom floor
but
found no one. He buzzed the intercom to the second story but no one
answered. Realizing the house was empty, he considered how spooky the
house seemed. He'd thought some member of his dysfunctional
family would have thought to wake him before doing their vanishing
acts. "Should I be worried?" he wondered. He
returned to
the kitchen.
Victor looked around the kitchen and finally
spotted a message that he guessed had fallen off the door of the Fridge
and into the crevice between the Fridge and the side cabinet.
He
picked the note up and looked at the writing. It appeared his mom had
scribbled the note rather quickly as it was not her normally neat,
cursive penmanship. "Fridge broken. Food spoiled.
Your dad
and I off to buy a new one. Stewart and Judy have already left for
classes."
Victor had forgotten the night before to tell anyone
that he was going to need a ride to college the following
morning. Now Victor was home alone and his mustang was on the
fritz as he had not gotten to the junkyard to pull the parts that he
needed for his car. Without a ride there was no way he was
going
to be able to make his first class but he figured he should be able to
easily make his second class. He decided he would walk to
college
with his thumb out and hoping for a ride from someone.
Victor
didn't normally hitchhike and the prospect of a stranger picking him up
made him very nervous. Still, there he walked on the side of
the
road trying to thumb a ride. A beat up old truck pulled up
next
to him. The driver was Buz Haln. He had spiked red
hair and
sort of crazy looking eyes. Victor guessed he was in his
forties
though he might have been younger. He had music blaring,
"Kill
the bastards." The way he was looking Victor up and down
frightened Victor and so Victor shook his head no.
"Yo, suit yourself," Buz screamed at Victor as he sped off.
Then
another old truck pulled off to the side of the road a few feet in
front of Victor. Victor walked up to the driver side and saw
a
lady was driving. She had kind of a rough look about her but
seemed harmless enough. "Hey, my name is Trudy
Jackson.
Son, do you need a ride?" She called Victor, son.
Victor
thought, "Now how could I mistrust a lady who called me son?"
Trudy
had blonde hair and wore her makeup kind of on the thick
side.
Victor noticed her nice cleavage for a moment and then he looked back
up at her face. Regardless of her calling Victor "son," she didn't
exactly look like the motherly type. Still, she didn't
frighten
Victor. He said, "Yeah, I am on my way to the college."
"So am I. Sugars, do a beep bop and hop in. I am
sort of running late."
Victor
ran around to the passenger door and jumped into the truck.
He
hardly considered any bad thing that might happen with this
lady.
Then there was a moment. It was a scary moment.
Trudy
Jackson pulled right out in front of another vehicle.
"Oh no,"
Victor screamed. The other car blew their horn at Victor and
Trudy, and a hand appeared out the passenger window giving them the
bird. Trudy snarled as she watched the truck speed on pass
them
in the other lane. Victor stuck his hand out of the window,
mocking the insulting hand gesture though he was sure they didn't see
his reply.
"Where the hell did that truck come from? Must
have been a blind spot in my mirror," Trudy said. Then Trudy
looked at Victor with a smile. "Say, don't we have a class
together."
Victor thought a second and then he wondered
why he hadn't recognized her. With a bit of embarrassment in
his
voice he said, "Yeah, we do. Biology class where there are
like
200 other students. I am sorry I didn't recognize you."
"No. That is cool, but yeah, you sit next to that strange girl."
"No. Jack is a dude."
"Total face palm. I thought he was a lesbian."
Victor
laughed. "Jack is okay. You should hear him play
the
drums. Like damn. His band, the Jack Minx Offs,
sometimes
play at the Mud Race Track between races. Have you ever been
there?"
"No. Recreation is not in my budget. Right
now I've got so many bills and this truck needs work done on
it.
Like fucking hell. It is just always one thing after another."
Victor asked, "What is wrong with your truck?"
"A dead alternator."
Victor
told her that he would pull an alternator tonight at the junkyard for
her and install it for her tomorrow before class.
She said, "Honey, I can't afford it."
Victor said, "Not a problem. Just pay me when you
can. You did me a favor and this is a way to repay."
Victor
and Trudy arrived at the college and with she being late she ran toward
her class. Victor's first class only had about 15 minutes
left so
he saw no reason to try to make it. He still had about an hour to kill
before his second class. Walking around Victor saw his brother Stewart
sitting with a couple of his jock buddies and their
girlfriends.
Reluctantly Victor walked over to Stewart with his friends.
Victor realized that Stewart had never liked it when he would come
around him when he was with other people. Victor thought he
was
an embarrassment to his brother and so sometimes he would tease and
make fun of them to get on Stewart and his friend's nerves but then
Victor stopped. It ceased being fun and he'd made a habit to
generally avoid Stewart when he was with other people.
Clearing
his throat Victor said, "So Stewart, can you drive me to the Gravedig
Junkyard today after classes. I need to get a couple of parts
for
my broken down car and also I need to pull an alternator for a friend."
Solemnly Stewart said, "Sure." Then he questioned, "If your
car is on the fritz how did you get here today?"
"I hitched."
"Man that is dangerous. Someone might pick you up and then
rape and kill you."
"No. A lady that is in one of my classes gave me a
lift. There was no danger."
One
of Stewart's friends, Harry Walsh, stared at Victor and Victor stared
back. Then Victor was unnerved when he suspected that there
might
be a bit of lust in Harry's wishful like stare. The look confused
Victor because "Harry does have a girlfriend." Victor
considered
that sometimes he does misread people and so he figured that maybe he
was wrong. Victor thought, "Lust? That is probably
more
likely a look of hate."
Harry's girlfriend, Sarah Kelly, walked
up to Victor and she put her hand on his shoulder. Then she
sort
of eased her arm around his neck and hugged him so that his chest was
touching her chest. Squirming at her forward gesture Victor
looked at Harry. Victor was sure Harry would respond in some
jealous manner but if Harry was jealous he did not show any sign of
such emotion.
Suddenly Sarah screamed, "Oh my God, what is that in your
hair. Is that sperm in your hair?"
Somehow
Sarah had managed to put some kind of novelty store slime in Victor's
hair. Victor's brother Stewart screamed at Sarah, "Why did
you
put that slime in my brother's hair? Totally not cool."
Sarah protested, "I did not put anything in his hair."
Harry
stepped forward. "My girlfriend did not do anything to your
brother. He probably got that sperm in his hair while he was
sucking off whoever gave him a ride." Harry had no idea why
he
was going along with his girlfriend's stupid joke. The moment
the
words had come out of his mouth he wished he could have taken them back.
Stewart
grabbed Harry up by the shirt collar. He was just about to
punch
Harry in the face when Victor grabbed Harry by the arm and tossed him
away from Stewart. Victor said, "Man, he is not worth
it.
Don't get kicked out of college on my account."
Victor looked
at Harry laying in the bushes with his legs over his head from where
Victor had thrown him. The expression on his face as he
looked at
his own crotch was comical. Giving Victor a dirty look, Sarah
rushed to help her boyfriend from the bushes. As she pulled on Harry to
help him up she stared at Victor. She said, "Just because you
knocked some girl up does not mean that you are not gay."
With a confused expression and a wrinkled brow, Victor grimaced and
spoke in a puzzled voice, "What?"
Harry stood up, "Sarah has been watching some shit on Lifetime TV too
much. Just ignore her."
"You
bastard. Don't tell him to ignore me. We all know
Jossette
was pregnant when her family sneaked out of town but just because you
knocked the girl up does not mean that you are not gay."
Harry
shocked everyone, especially Sarah, when he raised his hand like he was
going to slap Sarah but then he quickly moved his hand to wipe dirt off
the seat of his pants. Still his voice had an edge, a tone that had its
own sting. "Jack Minx told me that Jossette died--hear me,
she
died--from an infection. That gossip you heard is
bullshit. She was in the hospital dying. She was
not having
a baby."
Stewart looked at his brother Victor. Then he looked at
Harry. "Dead. Jossette is dead? Are you sure?"
Victor
said, "I was at the hospital. Unknown to mom, Terence called
and
talked to dad and they made sure I was there so she would know I never
stopped loving her and she told me that she loved me. You
know,
our parents had kept us apart but we each thought ... well, we thought
something else."
Stewart frowned. "My God. Jossette is
dead. When did this happen?"
"You remember my accidental sleeping pill overdose."
Stewart
started to fuss that no one had told him but then Stewart thought back
to that time period. Their father had become afraid that
Victor
was going to kill himself. He guessed he understood why no
one
had told himself or Judy. Stewart saw the devastated look on
Sarah's face. She sank into Harry's arms and he comforted her
as
she whispered, "I didn't know."
Silently Stewart and Victor
walked away from Stewart's friends and Sarah. He put his arm
around his brother's shoulder. "I know you loved Jossette and
I
am so sorry about what you went through. Still, you do know
all
of my friends think you are gay. It isn't just Sarah."
Victor asked, "I know what they think but do you think I am gay?"
"Your best friend is Jack Minx."
Victor
stared at Stewart and thought, "My brother thinks I am gay."
Victor wasn't sure what to say to Stewart. He cleared his throat, "Just
because I am not as good at football as you or that I throw a baseball
like a girl or hate spiders does not mean that I want to have sex with
men. I know a couple of people who are gay and I have no
problem
with the fact they do like having sex with men but that is not me."
Stewart cocked his head. "You are telling me that you have
never had sex with Jack Minx."
"I have never had sex with any man."
"Did you ever have sex with Jossette?"
"We
kissed. We petted but no, we never had sex." Victor
decided
to turn the tables on his brother. "Have you even done that
much
with a woman?"
Stewart laughed. "Yeah, some, but you are right. My
love life also sucks."
The
lady, Trudy Jackson, who gave Victor a ride walked near Victor and
Stewart. She stopped. She said, "Would you believe
that
bitch would not let me in the class because I was running ten minutes
late."
Victor said, "I am sorry. It was probably because of me you
were late."
"No.
Stopping to give you a lift didn't cost me but a couple of minutes at
most. Having to swap charged batteries on my truck is what
caused
me to be late."
"I will have that alternator for you in the morning."
"Cool.
Thanks. Well, I have some billing crap I have to deal with at
the
administrative office. See you at our 1:00 PM class."
Victor
nodded and waved as Trudy took off toward the administrative offices.
Victor then looked at his brother Stewart. "What were we
talking
about?"
Mockingly Stewart teased, "The fact that your love life
is more pitiful than mine." Stewart started patting Victor on
the
back of his head but then screamed, "Yuck. That slime stuff
in
your hair is a mess. You have to go over to the gym shower and wash
that stuff out of your hair."
